Just replaced an alternator and belt on my 2000 2.7L 4Runner for not starting. After replacing the alternator it started and seem to run while parked without an issue. The next day started it up and it ran for 5 minutes before it stopped. The battery was being drained again. Out of ideas. Does anyone have other areas in which to look?

    Thanks.

I have to assume you have a new battery and didn't just replace alternator and belt first?

If it started then died right after it may be a fuel issue? Once started it should keep running even with a dead battery.

Yes, it's a new battery. It got drained after startup. I waited a few months before I changed the alternator and belt. I charged the battery with a jump for about half-hour 45 min. Then it started. I let it run for 5 min or so without the jump cables. I do have a battery indicator light on.

Have you had the "newer battery" load tested. There is possibility it could have a defect.

Are you sure the original alternator was bad? Assuming it’s a refurb, have you checked the brushes on the replacement?

Get a multimeter and check for voltage drops across fuses and find the circuit that is the issue.

Disconnect all non factory electronics. These are almost always the source.

Don't just throw parts at it until you know.
