I knew going into this I wasn't buying a show truck, so I wasn't going to let small paint imperfections bother me.

I don't neglect it, but I also don't worry about the little things.

    I'm much happier this way.

I hear ya on the small things. Me neither. I just took out a bird yesterday, got out, and just shook my head.

Is this ceramic coating a once and done thing? Or like a yearly apply. I have heard of this but never learned what it really is about.

This is my thinking too. I might consider ceramic coating on the roof if I decide to put on a Gobi rack.

^ ceramic coat anything and everything... it works great for protecting paint. I know on the tacomas white and blue were the colors to look out for. White just flaked off in spots, and blue had clear coat issues.

I think a clear vinyl wrap would be the call under a roof rack. At least for me.

Chips and scratches are not really that bad on it unless you get a really deep chip, or it’s on the plastic and it is a big black spot.

You’ve got mr curious. How long does a vinyl wrap last, and when you peel it up what does the paint underneath look like?

I just had Xpel installed on my front end, hood, mirrors etal. They told me easily 10 years but after that I should consider re doing it.

My initial thoughts after having it two months is the install looks great. The grill area on an ORP is difficult with all the curves near fog lights etal.

Time will tell but so far I trust the place I went as they serve Ferrari and exotic car enthusiasts plus all the old classic muscle cars. They have a special garage within a garage if you will to keep out any dust and they have a special hvac system to keep the room clean to install the film

Just went to that location the other week, love the honey bbq laid out all fancy on the dish. Don’t know what they do but those wings are amazing.

Quite a while. Probably 7 years or so.

I know there's ceramic coating companies out there that claim their products will last the same amount of time, but I don't buy it. I don't think there's any kind of paste or compound you can rub on the paint that will protect the surface that long.

Ceramic coating can absolutely last 7 years. Depending on a multitude of factors like: is it exposed to 7 winters with rock salt, what kind of car washes do you go through, etc.. The hardened properties will certainly deteriorate year after year. But you could get 7 years. As for PPF, the idea of it is after 7-10 years you remove the film and the paint is still in the exact same condition as when you applied it.

So you're saying ceramic coating can last 7 years without any weather?

I've never seen a ceramic coat last 2 seasons of a Northeast winter. I doubt you can get 7 years out of any brand unless its applied and stored in a garage.

Yeah...there's absolutely no way it lasts 7 years. Dealerships will spew that bull to sell you a ceramic coating. If you really want ceramic coating, go to a real auto detailer and get a full paint correction and have it professionally applied. It'll last a long time but it's not gonna last 7 years. The ceramic coatings you get from a dealership are probably applied by some flunky in the service bay who slaps it on without any paint correction or proper prep work.

I have Xpel and so far love it. You can’t tell anything is in there unless open the hood and see a wrapped edge if put on properly.

They have a kit for the 4R also. A good installer can simply pull up the vehicle and print a custom sheet. The only tricky part is bumper with curves near fog lights. It’s a lot of tight curves. I had one small pocket but you have to be right up on it to see it

I had my 2020 Taco ceramic coated by the dealership when I bought it (Did not know any better at the time). They did a full cut and polish and it looked fantastic. I did however have some issues losing the hydrophobic properties, but that came down to the dealership not knowing how to properly maintain ceramic coating, nor explaining to the consumer how to maintain ceramic coating. I reached out to some shops who do ceramic coating who was able to put me on the right track. It was holding strong at the 3 year mark when I sold it to buy my 4Runner.
