Hopefully it's next year. I'll be ready to trade in the family Jeep GC by then. Be nice to have a couple 4runners sitting in garage, especially since my son keeps eyeing my TRD Pro.

Agreed. I'm happy to have my 5th Gen powertrain and ladder frame :)

I doubt they would go uni-body when they have the highlander for that, but could still do a weight redution and do a taco powertrain which would be awful.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see a Taco-like powertrain, especially more gears. That's just the way things are going.

However, a little more low end torque and some computer changes could make the 3.5L + tranny so much better. That torque will only come from forced induction, however, so that engine is simply built to be a high revver.

I just drove a brand new 2017 Camaro SS and I can feel the "fiddling" with the transmission's computer, it feels simliar, but not nearly as bad as my Tacoma. I drove a 2017 Corvette Grand Sport and honestly I didn't feel it, and I think that thing is a 10 speed tranny. Drove a new Silverado and it was there, just like my 2011 was there. Torque Management GM calls it, and it sucks.

I could see them putting the 3.5L motor in the 4Runner with a turbo.

:canada:I'm not too keen on the idea of a 3.5 turbo. The only turbo I ever owned was an '05 PT Cruiser, and I loved the 210 hp in that little car, but I sure hated having to pay for premium fuel all the time. I'll take cubic inches any day, especially in a heavy truck. - Ted

There are plenty of modern vehicles with turbos don't require premium fuel, Ford ecoboost being one of them. I just think it's an inevitability that cubic inches will be getting smaller and smaller in most vehicles and they will compensate with electric motors, turbos, ect... It sounds a bit sacrilege, but a hybrid 4runner could be pretty badass if they do it right. 4 small electric motors at each wheel giving you superior 4wd capabilities and a shit-ton of torque.
