2022 4Runner Gas Gauge Issue

I’m having an issue with my fuel gauge. It is intermittently going up and down every 10 miles or so. I’ve taken it to the dealership to have them investigate it under warranty but was told they could not run any tests since I have a switch pro 9100 installed into the vehicle. They believe that the switch pro is drawing too much current therefore causing the issue. May I have everyone’s insight on the problem? I personally believe it may be a bad fuel send unit.

 

How is everything wired? Are you powering your aftermarket stuff direct from the battery? If so, it should be easy to disconnect the lead from the battery and see if the problem still remains. Disconnect your relay from the switching source as well. Disconnecting all of it is going to be necessary to prove it’s not the problem.

On the other hand, if your switchpro or any other aftermarket accessory draws power from a fuse location, especially one in the engine bay, it very well might be the source of your problems. Again disconnect everything and return all factory circuits to stock configuration. If the problem is resolved, then wire up a 12v lead directly from the battery to put power to your accessory bus/block you have nicely installed (looks great!). For your relay, it might be better to use a fuse tap on a 12v accessory slot inside the cab. In fact, even the power to switch the the relay might be enough to mess with things if it’s being switched by a sensitive circuit.

I will continue with that troubleshooting advice and get back to you on the outcome. As for the power, I have a fuse tapped onto a 12v ignition fuse inside my driver side fuse block so no fuse is being tapped inside the engine bay. I believe the switch pro is pulling half a miliamp, but I doubt that could cause any issues right? Nonetheless, I will continue with your troubleshooting advice. Thank you!

 

Maybe just a thought, disconnect all power to your switch pro and see if it still causes your fuel gauge to go crazy. If your fuel gauge is still wonky take it to the dealership then, with your switch still disconnected. Let them figure it out or better yet fix it under warranty. Then hook up your switch pro afterwards. Just my .02 cents.

 

I’ve taken my vehicle into the dealership to get it repaired under warranty and I simply told them I could unplug the positive lead of the battery to isolate the switch pro, but they said I would have to rip out the whole system in order for them to work on it. I requested to speak to their general manager to see if they could help understand what I was saying, but they denied me the ability to speak to him.

 

Thats a rough one. Id try again with the GM and if that doesn't work Id take it to another dealership. I know thats easier said that done, in my case thats an extra 3 hour one way drive....maybe your closer to other options?

 

Quick question, did your truck come with that battery from the factory?
