Just bought a 2016 4runner trail premium. It has an Icon lift, 6 cylinder. 1st, the car seems sluggish, is that because of the 6 cylinder? will regret getting a 6 cylinder?
2nd, I want a really sharp after market front bumper and winch. What is best? thanks.

If you think your 4Runner is sluggish as it sits now, I would reconsider an aftermarket bumper and winch if I were you. Adding more weight will make it seem more sluggish.

    ^^ this.

The lift, tires, and all the upgrades will make it even more sluggish.

I have a front bumper from Southern Style OffRoad and a Smittybilt 10,000 on mine as well as a 3" lift. Like the look and winch and bumper together only adds 137#. Mine doesn't seem too sluggish, but I am coming from a 2008 Rubicon that was definitely a slug power wise, and also, I wasn't expecting a muscle car. These are for normal highway and exceptional off road use, not NASCAR.

I just dropped off my new 2016 4runner for work. I have an Icon stage 5 lift, 33" tires. I am having a Southern style offroad bumper installed with a Smitty Belt winch with flat link E pro, 20" Heise lite bar, 4 amber likes in the grill, 2 pair of dual KC Hilite Flex lites on hood near A Pillar. I'm gonna wait on the rack because I want to find a really attractive one that isn't too high, not sure if I should put a ladder on it, but probably will. This will complete my 4Runner. The 2016 I bought has 6,000 miles, Trail Premium package, leather, heated seated and the guy I bought it from did over $11,000 in lift, suspension, tires and wheels. Got it for $38,000. Toal value of the vehicle with add ons is $53,000, I did good. Except for the roof rack and backup lines, it's done--and awesome. I love the way this truck drives and it feels incredibly solid

BTW, is a new air in take very important? new exhaust? will that make much of a horsepower difference?

Yes and no, no horsepower increase. But change the air filters, the stock ones are bad at trpping dust. Mine were shot at 3k miles with some offroad use. I bought K&N so i can wash and reuse and i no longer have a blanket of sand and dust in my cabin.

    Ockie, I hope this helps.

First, all 4Runners have the same engine and transmission in the 5th gen, regardless of spec. Currently no supercharger available in the aftermarket either.

I find the engine has great low end torque, and that's exactly what you want for towing and off roading. It's kinda gutless at high revs, such as entering highway and needing to get on it.

If it feels too sluggish, considering you have a lift and tires and armor, consider re gearing. If you don't mind the MPG loss then good. But you'll likely drop to 14 - 15 MPG tops.

Air intakes and exhausts will provide some benefit, but most of that benefit will be in your head, and a little more noise.

This is not a fast car, it's not built to be fast. It's built to tackle extreme terrain, and if you give it a chance to do it, it will blow your mind how good it is. I wheel with people with Rubicons all the time and I haven't been left unable to complete something they did yet. MTS is almost like a front locker. Crawl control is just kinda ok. Rear locker is a rear locker. Atrac is a less selectable version of MTS, so I just use locker and MTS and get 3.5 wheels locked.

Compared to a non Rubicon jeep it's better. Compare to a Rubicon it's almost on par. If you're a better driver than the Jeep driver, it's better. If you're not, it's still almost as good. However, no death wobble, cabin is roomy and doesn't leak, and it's comfortable on long road trips. No way I'd trade, but I still respect the Rubicon.

I believe they are tentatively going to be released in Dec 2017. Is that correct?

To be honest no one knows a 100%. They have been talking about a SC for years, and I do think they are working on it. It will be out when it's out honestly...

I could have used it towing that trailer in the mountains last month, so I won't be upset if it shows up.
