Help! Purchasing a branded title 2021 4Runner and wonder what you think!

I understand. Inflation is a bitch. I paid $35K for my 2003 Limited V8 4Runner. Couldn't justify replacing it when I bought my 2019 and ended up in an SR5P.

If it were me, I simply would not under any condition pay $35K for a salvage title 4Runner, period. If that was max budget I would take that $35K and find a slightly older 4Runner with the lowest miles and a clean title.

Ideally, I would not buy now at all. If I had no choice I think new models are a better deal than 1-3 year-old used considering the crazy nature of current pricing.

 

Insurance sent us a letter showing what the body shop found. I’m not quite sure of the wording, but it was weld points in the firewall or something. I’m not really sure and we’d never dealt with a totaled vehicle before and just accepted the finding.

 

Yeah don't buy it.

There is a reason a newer model was totaled.

 

Here's a certified used one at the local dealer that comes with a warranty for certified cars. They are around so it might be worthwhile to look around.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind this trap...

 

If you were going to turn this into a project....that is, big modifications etc, then maybe, but if it is to restore to stock, then NO. I would Maybe pay up to 15k for something like this if I was to start making changes. The surprise factor will be there as you get into the work.

 

Salvage titled vehicles are worthless ... should you be involved in a write-off accident.

Some Insurances wouldn't even cover it.


The use case is different, than if you buy it salvaged from Copart and fixed it correctly for personal use.

And then use it till it dies.

Otherwise, its junk.


I got a salvaged titled GM Pontiac in my youth days. For 3k. Sold by a local dealer.

The electrical system was a mess. All the lights would just go out. Engine will still be running though.

Electricity was passing through the vehicle.

I had to go back to GM dealership to correct the gremlins. Cost thousands.


When I wanted to buy another vehicle with trade-ins. No dealership would accept it for trade-ins - Because of liability issues.


Had to sell for a few hundred bucks.
