Are there any issues with a mounting an EZ Pass in the standard windshield spot? I have a license plate mount on my current vehicle, but too many readers are optimized for windshield mounts and don't pick it up there. I also now prefer to have it inside and removable this time around.

Had a NJ EZ pass mounted in the recommended location no issue. Now have Texas EZ passes mounted in the recommended location with no issues. NJ was on a 2017. Texas are on 2017 and 2021

I used to drive from Detroit to Pittsburgh twice a month to an ex girlfriends and use rental cars. I had my own easy pass and just held it up by the mirror while driving through the scanners. Would that be an option for you?

I miss that girl some days and others not so much. Definitely don’t miss the drive

I have the Derpifornia equivalent in the black area of the windshield without issues.

It might be. Having the inside velcro mount makes it at least possible. We had limited success on my wife's car, but I think the transponder was dying (we replaced it shortly thereafter). We mainly had issues with the scanners on I-80 in Indiana and Ohio.

Yeah I don’t want the penalties may or may not be and I don’t really drive on toll roads anymore. But for two years it worked well for me and back then they discounted the rates for easy pass versus cash and it was much quicker.

I just simply logged into my account and registered my rental car to the easy pass prior leaving with plate number etc.

Good luck with it. Worth a shot anyway

Transponder? As in a small plastic box? Velcro? That is very old school, I would think most locales have switched over to the sticker style in the window, no transponder. Mine is the size of a stick of gum, the gov't wants it stuck in the lower driver's side corner.

Seems it's been a decade now without the biggish plastic transponder. There's a chip in the sticker.

Yes, exactly. It would be nice to have the sticker here, but I'm not holding my breath. They just let a $900M contract to convert the NJ Turnpike to EZ Pass-only, and I doubt they'll use different technology than the Garden State Parkway or the Port Authority.

In Texas the system reads license plates if your tag isn’t working. And it won’t even notify you unless you get new plates and haven’t gone online and changed them.

Edit to say the reason I know this is that where I work we have to go through a gate that is opened by our EZ Tag via an RFID system. Sometimes when someone’s tag isn’t working because they got a new windshield and the shop R&Rd it, they don’t understand why it works just fine on the toll road but won’t open the gate. It’s because the toll road uses cameras and we don’t. Same with some who have put them on their windshield in a spot that blocks the signal. Works fine on the toll road but not with our sensors.

For what it's worth, you don't necessarily have to get the toll pass issued by your state. If you find another state that issues a toll pass that is more to your liking as far as agreements with other states, form, cost, etc., you may be able to get into that program. I'm not sure if that applies to ALL toll pass programs, but I know at least SOME of them allow out-of-state enrollment.

If you go with a temporary mount transponder, Dual Lock strips are more secure than Velcro and are issued by some programs.

Yes, many toll stations have that capability, even in NJ. Its implementation seems to be much better than the transponders. Some studies have shown that in multi-sensor stations, the license plate reader generates more successful transactions than the transponder, so a lot depends on the stations you go through. Perhaps not surprisingly, it's only after a court ruling a couple years ago that NJ started correlating license plate scans with EZ Pass accounts. Previously, they used license plate scans to fine anyone who pass through a station without generating a transponder transaction. Unfortunately, that included many valid EZ Pass users whose transponders the station failed to read, hence the lawsuit. The court ruled that the state must determine whether the vehicle is tied to an EZ Pass account before issuing a fine.

The place where I most consistently have problems with my license plate mounted transponder and the license plate scanner is long term parking at Newark Airport.

Not sure about other EZ Pass. For CO, I stick the transponder thing to the left of rear view mirror and work perfectly. I used this transponder (that is on the TRD) on my Limited at the same location for the mpg test video for just one time and my toll bill says it detected my TRD. So I didn't have to pay the higher price of license plate toll for that video. I paid the transponder price..:p

The recommended EZ mount site is right next to the rear view mirror on the passenger side, so it's generally not in the driver's field of view. They specify minimum distances from the side and the top of the embedded stuff, something like 1.5-2 inches.

I wish our system worked as well as CO, but the tolls out there are nasty, especially E-470, which I use frequently.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Sitting in the driver's seat, I have my ezpass mounted to the right of the rear view mirror in a manner that I can't see it from where I'm sitting. I never had any problems.

In fact, here's a pic. Click on it to zoom in if you need to. You can see where the ezpass is from the outside.

I don't drive tolls roads much. When I need the transponder, I simply toss it on the dash, face up. Never a problem. Been doin' this for 15 (?) years.

Official Toyota. It was installed when I bought the 4Runner. People have said it rubs away paint. I guess it's a good thing I don't plan on removing it. For just over 3 years, I haven't had any problems whatsoever with the windshield. If the thing is doing its job then I guess it's doing its job well.
