Whoever says that the cold air intakes don’t work, they do. I’ve been getting MPGs in the 20s since I got it a few weeks ago

 

Neato. Now put AT tires and one bolt on accessory on it and see what happens

 

hows the highway mileage?

 

What is intake temperature drop with it? Is it really colder than stock?

 

Where do people think the OEM airbox pulls air from?

 

This and the loss of filtration performance.

 

A properly built cold air intake can make a difference, and the returns aren’t necessarily linear.

the bad wrap comes from both oil imbedded washable style filters that damaged maf sensors , and typically they pulled hotter air with more drag due to poor engineering.

however, done correctly there can be noticeable improvements, especially forced induction. Increased flow capacity due to larger more aero ducts, routing that pulls from a better location, more filter area with a high flow membrane to overcome drag inherent with filters, and better material selections for heat shielding/isolating the intake.

I could see a benefit but I wanna see the data. I second the question of IAT delta.

That 22 mpg number looks to be at an avg speed of 43 mph over a short time, which my stock ORP with the off road upgrade package will do (actually over time at that speed, it’s a bit higher as I’d expect yours would be as well).

Can you show the mpg at 75 mph over about 20-30 min? That’s where mine ends up around 19/20, though last week between Waco and San Antonio I got 21 with the cruise set on 77, which I didn’t expect. For reference that’s about 2.5 hr trip.

 

I live in a semi rural area and I make an effort to stay on secondary roads. I clear 23mpg all the time on tanks in the mid 45mph range average with the OEM intake. I do drive quite easy though.

Btw, it has been tested and proven that gauze type air filters like K&N are terrible filters. I bought a freshly rebuilt used sport ATV awhile back and it came with a K&N, the very first thing I did was pull it and replace with a two stage foam/oil filter.

Report back after you should add one of these. You'll probably hit 30mpg (downhill while coasting, but still).

 

I used to regularly get 22 with mine when it was bone stock. About 50/50 highway & rural roads, not much stop and go. 50-65mph speed limits on the highway.

After stock size ATs, full skids, and sliders, I'm at 19.5 - 20.5 regularly.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, it's improving slightly. This last tank was 20.8, and right now I have an indicated 414 mile range.

 

Meh, so have I. Pretty much ever since it stopped dropping below freezing at night. Might be because its programmed to run rich until it reaches operating temperature which takes longer when it's colder outside. Might also be because mine's getting broken in, almost 4,000 miles now. I mean, hey, I did see 25.4mpg last week (over a 3.5 mile trip where it was already warmed up from a previous trip).

This is with stock size LT rated AT's too...

5 miles of surface roads with a lot of stop and go because of all the traffic lights then about 12 miles of freeways where I set the radar cruise to 75mph.
Fairly flat overall (no uphill or down hill)

I’ve got stock tires (nitto terra grappler), Gobi stealth rack, rock sliders, and the TRD intake. Other than that it’s pretty much stock.

 

It amazes me that people are claiming mpg numbers based on such small trips, and using that display. Tell me how many miles you got to a tankful, then I'll believe you.

 

i never bothered to learn how the computer calculates mileage. right now i think it says i’m getting something in the low 17s but my fuel log says otherwise. i personally don’t chase mpg and just use it as a health measure for my truck. any sudden deviations means i need to look at things.

 

Yow. Looks like gas in SoCal is about $1.00/gal more than here...

 

Agree. Whenever I talk about mileage it's over a full tank and hand calculated. My 2013 doesn't do the per trip calculation anyway.

It really depends on what the drive is about. On my commute to work I average 20-21 mpg. Whether I do it once or 20 times it’s going to be very similar.

Now if you’re talking about going to the lake, going camping, going off roading, etc… it’s going to be very different numbers.
Most of the time I commute with the motorcycle and use the 4R to go skiing, off roading, camping so yes for me I’m going to be getting different numbers than the pic I posted above. Nonetheless it’s interesting (at least to me) to see what I’m getting on a regular commute to work. If I do that everyday I’ll still get around the same number over a full tank. I didn’t get the 4R to be gas efficient anyways

 

Im getting 20.2 with the OEM intake and no modifications. I wonder with the TRD Pro intake may do any difference on MPG? I have one but haven't gotten the time to install as of yet.

 

Personally I doubt it makes any significant differences

for what it’s worth, anymore cad changed the game. Most factory intake and exhaust from valve to origin/end are infinitely more efficient than the most amazing aftermarket products of the group B days.

the bar keeps going higher, if only companies built the cars that the people want.

 

On a warm desert highway…
Flat road, 65MPH, calm wind, stock 4Runner, cruise control on…
I get real time 22 MPG.

Over a full tank, anywhere from 16 to 20.

And here I thought CAIs were all about butt dyno raw power. Huge mpg gains are a new selling point. They better make more of them, people will be lining up to save at the pump.
