After working 6 weeks on my son's 2009 4Runner Sport, he is now driving it around and everything is good.

He bought it at 207,000 miles. I suggesting that he replace the starter, water pump, and fuel pump. Previous owner changed the alt about 1 month before we bought it.

The main question is if we buy a good brand, the items I suggested should last 100,000 miles...... right? I looked at RockAuto Fuel pump, there is Denso and Delphi for about $110.
I would think this is a good brand, but hope that it's a simple unplug and plug, instead of having to cut wires and figure out which is which.

Any recommendations on fuel pumps, water pumps, or starters?

I just purchased an Aisin brand water pump as part of a kit that was recommended by another member here. They seem to be the supplier that supplies OEM parts. I’m sure you could buy it individually. Not sure about the starter or fuel pump tho.

That's the thing... we have NO idea how old the parts are. Better to change it when it's convenient, than have it go bad in the middle of winter or on a vacation.
Hence... the question... "a good brand should last 100,000 miles" ... right?

and what brands are good. I am sure Delphi and Denso are good ( for fuel pumps)
I see ACDelco for starter... but no idea about water pumps ( until Aisin was mentioned in post #2)

Exactly and no idea how long the "new" part will last either.

    I use Aisin from Napa.

Since you really want to dig in. I'd check what motor you have. One has a timing belt and not chain.

Electrical parts like starters, alternators, fuel pumps - use Denso. Denso is the OEM manufacturer for pretty much all Toyota branded electrical related parts. Spark plugs, stick with NGK. Water pump, Aisin. When in doubt, go with OEM Toyota parts, if they are available. They usually are but will be a little pricier.

As to how old the parts are, just assume that they are however old the truck is unless you have some sort of proof it has been replaced.

    Xtremewlr... Thanks, that makes sense.

Now I was in for a shock... I was reading the Haynes manual and none of those 3 items are "easy" to replace. All of them requires removing other things out of the way.
Starter requires disconnecting the intermediate drive shaft?
Water pump require removing alternator and AC compressor?

    Guess I better plan ahead...

Thats why if it ain't broke don't fix it.

You might be able to sneak some of those items out by squeezing different from the manual.

Don't replace the starter. Those don't go bad.

Seriously, stop trating it like a Ford or Chevy. These parts run for 40 years.

Don't replace any of these. 1) they are not broke. 2) The parts are well made OEM and can last 400K+. 3) Even good name brand parts made today are not as good as older parts. The entire parts industry has been churning out poor quality the last few years. Many new, good brand parts fail right out the gate or shortly after install. 4) Save the money you planned on spending, put it in a savings account for repairs-as they come up. 5) Do the required maintenance-oil, coolant, trans, diff, brakes, etc. if they are due instead of wasting money on working parts.

So you guys are saying that at 250,000 miles, the starter, water pump, alternator, and fuel pumps are likely to still be original?

    What about 300,000 miles?

I replaced my Fuel pump at 250 Only because I needed to drop the tank for another issue.

Water pump is replaced with a timing belt.

But yes all of that other stuff is ORIGINAL on my 278k mile 2002 which I bought brand new in 2002.

Well you have a timing chain, i think you said. So the waterpump wouldn't necessarily be done at the same time as a timing belt. I don't think you would need to replace it unless you're getting some cooling issues or see a leak.

Would probably be smart to replace the thermostat at the same time... its like a $26 part (at least on my 4runner it is).

    I have 332k miles on my V8 4runner.

I've replaced the water pump because that's part of the timing belt service on the V8. If I had a V6, I'd probably do the water pump/thermostat/radiator hoses every 100k as preventative maintenance.

I've replaced my starter, mainly because I had the intake off at the time for something else and the V8 starter lives under the intake. Otherwise, it would still be there as it was working fine.

Alternator and fuel pump are original on my truck, with 332k miles on them and still working just fine.
