Rusty Gas Tank?

Hi again 4Runner fam,

So I've been working on this 97 2Runner that I got, 'trying to get it back into regular daily driver condition. I found out the Fuel Pump was bad, so I removed the tank. Then once I pumped all the gas out of the tank I found this ( pics below ). Should I get another tank? or should I be ok just washing out all the debris as best I can? The OCD side of me wants another tank. But the idea behind this car was to fix it up as low-cost as possible and I'm already into it more than I am comfortable with.

It’s hard to tell from those pictures how far gone it is. How’s the structural integrity?

No matter what it’s a tough call. There are kits for refurbishing old fuel tanks. POR-15 makes one. It’s a little more than $100. A new repop fuel tank can be found on eBay for $232.00. You can find

No matter what you can’t just wash it out.

 

Here are some better ones. The first ones were screenshots from a video I took. Either way judging from what I'm hearing I am going to try and find another tank anyway.

It looks bad, but not as bad as the prior photos. Why not check out some POR15 tank restoration videos and see the before/after condition of those tanks.

 

Take this comment with a grain of salt - had a buddies moped years ago that leaked water and rusted the inside of the tank. I read a technique of putting loose change inside and shaking around to break up and clean off the rust (followed up with some rust breaking and cleaning products). Was easy for a small tank but even after that and changing the inline fuel filters we still couldn't get it to run correctly.

Someone stole it a few weeks later - I assume putting it on a truck unless they got it to run somehow!

 

Another popular agitator is ball chain.

How did it look in person?

 

Looked good inside and the guy was really friendly. Gave me the tank and pump... I wanted and extra anyway. So I'm excited to put that in tomorrow after work.

The real prize I'm stoked about... I scored a 3.4 supercharger at the same time
