Hi! Newbie here coming over from TW. My poor Taco was killed by a red light runner. I'm looking to upgrade to a 4-Runner. Previously owned an '89 that made it to 200k miles. So while I wait for my insurance check I wanted to ask you guys a couple Q's. I've noticed 4-Runners (new) in my area go from $45k-75k. Knowing that I'm going to change everything i.e. lift, wheels and tires, stereo and bumpers, should I go for the bare bones SR5 or look to an OF or Sport? If anybody would know it'd be you guys. TIA.

It boils down to if you want the options that come with it. If you don't wheel when the SR5 will be fine and even then you can add a locker. The Sport is a Limited with a hood scoop but without JBL and no auto climate. Personally I'd go SR5 Premium over the Sport but then you don't get the fake scoop which I like.

I have an ORP because I wanted the rear locker and some of the features included with the premium package.

Depends on what you plan to do with the ride... Cruise the MILFs at the mall? Full blown off road racer or a dedicated overlander?
Each model has its perks and drawbacks. Some people buy the ORP or TRD Pro and never use all the features. Some get the SR5 and their Mod list is longer than a unrolled toilet paper roll...
But on the other hand, thats why I (and a lot of us) love customizing cars. If there is something that I want to change, delete, make better, I can do that how I want.

    Welcome.
SR5 Premium or Off-road Premium, depending on the OEM features that you want. The TRD Sport will have the lower valences and side skirts that will hinder some future mods and offroading.

casual off roader in an ORP here, but do moderate stuff when i'm out there. I haven't used crawl control at all but do use MTS on occasion to help out with the gas pedal and definitely use the locker to get out or over things.

premium interior in an off road is definitely is also something i appreciate a lot.

Welcome. If you're already thinking of changing stuff out before you get it. Then sr5, but if you need crawl control, then OR.

Before I bought my 2018 Off Road I did a ton of research. I wanted something that could do light to medium off-roading and for the money, the basic Off Road has it all. Been happy with its performance so far.

Depends what you want. I got an SR5 because a locker wasn’t a deal breaker, would’ve been nice but not for the markup. I’ve taken mine on many trails, has yet to meet an obstacle it hasn’t done. Most of the folks I know with ORs either don’t do offroading besides paved forest roads, or haven’t needed to use it.

I went with off-road premium, mostly because that's what I could get in my area. I really just wanted an off-road base package, but that was a loooong wait.

I got the off-road because I previously used the rear locker pretty frequently in my Taco and wanted that same functionality. I will say that the premium perks have grown on me, having the moon roof and rear window open this spring adds a nice air flow to the front seats. Haven't used any of the crawl control or mtm yet, but they seem like nice additions when the situation arises. I also didn't really want to do heavy mods, just new tires and maybe a lift down the road a few thousand miles.

It sounds like an SR5 should do it. You said ‘everything’ which may include gears. If you’re doing gears, then you can add the lockers of your choice.

if that logic fits your vision, the SR5 is a good choice. If not then go for the best deal you can get on a trim level you can live with.

    Good luck!

Same thing when I got my Tacoma. I spent weeks building trucks online just to find the same trucks at the dealership. Thanks for all the responses. Now if my damn insurance would cut me a check so I can go shopping.

I did exactly what you’re thinking. Bought a SR5. Put on Eibach pro 2 Toyo AT3s Sherpa roof rack. Diode dynamic fog lights. Baja Design light bar and I love it. For me it was about doing it how I wanted it.

for all the upgrades I did, I spent $5,823 - That includes $750 to install the Eibachs. The other additions, I installed
