Got a wheel vibration that comes and goes on the driver's side between 35 - 45 mph and sometimes at higher, highway speeds - vibration is very fine, almost like a hum, like driving on a corrugated road. I've read tons of posts about how common 4runner vibrations are, so I'm trying to diagnose it. Got underneath and pulled on the CV axle, it had a minute amount of side to side play, don't know if that's normal. Also have a minor 2-3 clicks when I reverse with the steering wheel hard over to the right.

I know there's probably a hundred other things this could be like cv axle, bearings, tires out of balance, rims, etc., but just wanted to hear your comments before I head to a shop and shell out the cash.

Not saying this is your issue, but it is a possibility. The driverside needle bearing has been known to cause the vibration you describe. Find a straight section of road open enough for hwy speed, engage your 4Hi system, and see if you can duplicate it. If the vibration subsides, it's likely the problem. This has been documented across several different models with the 8" front diff.
East Coast Gear Supply even has a solid bushing fix they have been selling for years. They even have a tool designed for the removal of the offending needle bearing.

Thanks for that MI-FL -- yeah, that's one of the things I watched a few videos about and I really appreciate the link, I'll check it out.

Try rotating LF to RF and see if vibration follows to the other side. I suspect you've tire issue. CV axle will sound like bunch of large bolts clunking at uneven pavement and parking lot speed.
