I was fortunate enough to have been hit by a bus, but not injured.

The rear quarter panel is going to have to be painted. Expecting it to cost around $1200-$1500...

Rather than waste that perfectly good money on restoring the 2022 limited oversized bumper I'd like to explore making it smaller with a better angle.

Anyone have any experience with an aftermarket bumper and the blind spot monitor system?

Heh, yeah. Was about to post my own tale of BSM woes,
and figured I'd search the forum one more time,
so's I don't ask any questions that may have already been answered.

I have a 22 ORP w/BSM (I understand this is the first year BSM was added to my trim).
I recently had a Victory4x4 Strike Rear Bumper installed.
I had the installer slightly move the BSMs (perhaps 5 inches up and 2 inward) so as to not reside behind the "steel" of the bumper.
Thereafter, all kinds of RCTA and BSM alarms which can be TEMPORARILY turned off, but reset after every engine restart.

I understand that the BSM's require ADAS recalibration,
and software that can reset the calibration flag in the ECU.
    My bumper installer couldn't/wouldn't do this;
and I then asked my local Toyota dealer to do it during my 5K service,
but they disavowed all help after seeing the aftermarket steel bumper.
(I imagine they wouldn't help because of lawyers and litigation and all....)

So, I've been trying to either
    - recalibrate the sensors to accommodate the new bumper geometry (preferable)
    - or turn the BSM/RCTA alerts off permanently to clear my dash of alerts.
I've been unsuccessful thus far, after about 4-6 hours in.
I've been trying using a scan tool (XTool D8) that claims to be able to reset the Master/Slave BSM Beam Axis Inspection.
I've been using a DIY ADAS target (alum foil and cardboard) and some data on measurements from a Tacoma forum, without luck.
    Either my
    - DIY ADAS target isn't robust enough (straight, flat, dense enough)
    - my target isn't in the right location (X and Y access from the vehicle)
    - or my legit scanner isn't working properly (I understand there are hacked versions of the Toyota TechStream sw available online)

I'm gonna start another thread asking if anyone can give me better information on
    - ADAS target reflector construction
    - and 22+ 4Runner BSM target locations (X and Y measurements from the rear hatch center plumb line.

    As to your question,
I would expect some pain on getting BSM to work with an aftermarket bumper.
    Neither the off road installer nor dealer wanted to touch it;
and the BSM addition in 2022 seems just a bit to new for robust DIY solutions to be posted.
And even if you just wanted to turn off the alerts and go without BSM/RCTA alerts,
the ECU will need to be altered to suppress those alerts, which I haven't yet investigated.

If I get my BSM's to work or disable them permanently, I'll post it!

Hacked tech stream user reporting in. Some features are not available for the hacked versions (key fob reprogramming), but can be accessed on a daily pay as you go daily rate on the legit non-hacked version.

I really appreciate you taking the time to work out the pain and hopefully shortening my inevitable pain if I follow down the same road.

I want everything, BSM and rear cross traffic alert, but I have to have the cream puff trim because I'm a delicate flower and I need ventilated seats.

Techstream daily rate ? I may have to try this.
Still missing some reflector information, but knowing I could get legit sw is helpful.

Ventilated seats you say? Didn't even know that was an option....
Wishing a heated steering wheel for my ORP was available

Just got my truck back from having a Victory 4X4 Strike bumper (and some other goodies) installed and had the BSM and RCTa alerts going off. The shop doing the install suggested calling "a larger independent" shop to see if they had the machines or call a dealership. The dealership said they'd recalibrate for $600. Found a local guy that a bunch of bodyshops sub the recalibration out to and he quoted me $320-$450 (he was travelling and wasn't able to generate an exact quote).

I'll be going with the local guy. His pricing (even if it ends up being the $450) is worth it to me to make sure everything is working right without going through the hassle of trying to DIY some sort of rig to hopefully get it right myself.

Can I leave the BSM monitors where they are and cut squares in the steel for them?

There's a company that makes a BSM compatible bumper for the Tacoma, but they aren't planning on doing anything for the 4runner.
