Looking for another Project Boat Picture heavy

It has been awhile since I had a small project boat in the Garage over the winter and maybe I am getting ahead of myself however I am in the process of having a new Garage quoted and with that going on I know I would like to do another project boat.

I prefer an All aluminum boat 14 to 16 footer with trailer in the pictures below is one I did to a 1968 Smoker Craft and the trailer.

The Pictures are at my old house now that I have moved I have lots of room for a shop!

When you said project boat, I thought of this. '76 Magnum Maltese. Dual 383 strokers. It got flooded in the hurricane, and needs a bunch of work. My mom's BF is going to sell it. This picture is from 2016 when I got my only ride in it.

 

This was my introduction into boating/fishing as a kid. I found this pic online. My Grandfather bought this exact boat on vacation in Cadillac Michigan.

I was maybe 6 or 7 sat on my Dads lap steering the boat and I was hooked!

 

Ha yes the Old Tri-Hull boats super stable on the water they lost popularity because they were just too darn heavy and expensive to make, There is a guy that fishes regularly at a location I go to with one and don't mater how rough the water is he will be out there yet.

 

You’re right. Once Grandpa and Dad started fishing Lake Huron for salmon and saw the waves they learned about Deep V boats quickly and got another boat.

 

That is the only big Lake in that Northern area I have not been on. I have been out on Superior, Michigan, Erie, and many times out on Ontario then Smaller lakes in the upstate NY region Seneca and Canandaigua Lake I think that if I was going to spend time on the Great Lakes again I would get another boat like my Jet boat below but only in a 21 footer thought because rough water? Nothing at all just sit back and enjoy!

 

We see a few those style boats out here but not many. There are not many dealers of those style boats here and it’s tough to find service.

I think the 18ft-20ft class is most popular for those middle income folks like me. Lund, Crestliner, Ranger, StarCraft are popular.

I am blessed to have these lakes so close. But I treat them with much respect. Many from other parts of the country underestimate these lakes and they can be dangerous for sure. It’s like a mini ocean really. I stay within 10 miles usually in my 18ft boat and follow the forecasts closely.

Lake Huron is not as popular for salmon now since most of the population is gone. Much of the bait fish died off or went to Lake Michigan so the salmon population declined. It is still a great fishery for walleye, lake trout, brown trout and white fish. Perch are plentiful also.

 

Yeah the Jet boats are every where out this way in Idaho, Montana and more North west areas I found that you going to own one you better be willing to learn to do your own work on them too.

 

Blast from the Past !!!!!

That boat is identical to a Starcraft 16 ft Nassau runabout we bought brand new in 1965.
There is also no mistaking the hull construction design and cast aluminum stern and bow fittings.
We bought it ready to roll with a TeeNee brand trailer, a convertible top with all curtains, anchor and rope, skis and rope, side bumpers, hitch installed on the car and a 40HP Evinrude Lark motor with extra tank. The Lark was the electric shift model. All brand new for $1750.00 in London, Ontario . It was garage kept other than daily weekend trips to the lake and 2 week long vacations in the summer at French River, Ontario. Around 1973 we replaced the 4HP for a 65HP Evinrude 3 cylinder motor. I had the poorly yellow painted trailer sandblasted and painted it with Dupont Imron mixed to match the Avocado Green color of the boat. In 1991 I sold it for $4500.00 as it was basically in like new condition.

Oh I would love to get my hands on one of those early 16 foot Starcraft boats (both Smoker Craft and StarCraft are owned by same group)
