    Hi, I recently purchased a 2019 4runner Limited.
It is my first time owning one and I absolutely love it.
Now understanding all the mods that can be made, I am wondering if I should have went with a TRD instead of the Limited. Any thoughts on whether I should trade the limited in and get a TRD? Mods wise is one better than the other?

    Better is a subjective term.
What are your intended uses? Daily driver? long commutes? off road driving? rock crawling?
What mods are you looking to do?

As the owner of a 2019 limited, unless you're just really more interested in things like mods, a base SR5 would be a good start. The Limited is more than capable of handling quite a bit of off-roading. Is it the same as my old D2 on a 3-in lift with 33s? No, of course not, but I didn't buy it for that. Common sense and a keen eye for picking the line will get you through probably 99% of your off-roading. Now, if you're interested in banging through the Rock garden, you're going to have to do some major mods to the limited, but it's still a 4runner.

Keep what you have. It will do just fine in most situations. You can always add a locker if you need it. I'd only trade in if you were going from 2wd to 4wd.

So, it would be limited off roading but still want it capable. I was going to put. 3” lift, tires, rims, and accessories. I guess my question was more around is the limited a pavement princess or able to handle some off road like the TRD?

It's the same basic vehicle but you have full time 4wd instead of 2wd and still have center locked 4wd and low range. It's more than adequate handle most things you throw at it. Departure and approach angles would be the only concern since there's slightly larger bodywork. Also you have 20" wheels so less tire when you air down but you can run 17s.

    IMO depends on your needs.

    • During wet & snow time I absolutely love my Limited over my TRD.This was the biggest reason where my wife cannot use the manual 4wd selector on TRD. Its too hard for her.
      • In late December my buddy's wife put the shifter to 4LO when shifting from 4H to 2H. So far nothing seems wrong but it did throw dash lights until reset with unplug the battery and plug it back after some time.
    • Per the owners manual you don't have to exercise the front actuator (I think its called ADD) about once a month (But I do exercise my center doff lock and low range)
    • I think Limited is little bit premium quality than TRD. I thought I saw a second level of window seem kinda things when I install the dog protector things. I'm not 100% sure. I could check again when weather gets warmer (34'F and Snow here in CO). Also little touches like foot well lights, ventilated seats give it a bit more nice feeling.
    • I absolutely love the XREAS suspension on road. Too bad
    • I removed it when lifting and never got that comfort again.
    • I do wish Limited came with 17in wheels and tires but I did it my self and very happy with it.

    • ** If you want more capability we have couple of members having crazy Limited builds and I think one guy has triple locked Limited (Factory center diff, after market front and rear diff lockers). That thing is a beast with crazy suspension and other mods.

So I would say give some time, search around the forum and then decide what you want to do..

Thanks. I am alittle leary of throwing a full suspension change on it until my warranty is done but if it handles well with what it has then I may just keep it as is with the exception of a leveling kit(if I can). The KDSS and other options on the limited are kinda why I started this post.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
On the off chance you have a 2WD limited... um... heads up.

you will probably lose some money on trade in and buying new one. Me personally, I like orp or sr5p better than any other trim and think trd is too much money. The looks themselves justified the purchase for me.
If you are overall happy with the vehicle why not just keep it?

I like the styling of the limited. Only thing I don't like is the awd..

I'd swap on some 275 55 20 all terrains tires and enjoy. It'll be plenty capable on and off road.

Most say the exact opposite. Want the full time 4wd, dislike the styling...

True, I dislike AWD for long trips. Wish it has 2wd & 4wd with center diff lock/unlock like the 4th gen V6.

I mostly feel the same. The AWD wouldn't be a deal breaker, but I would like to have a 2WD option on top of that.

I don't like the chrome on the limited, but the nightshade version and the TRD sport version of the LTD front end look pretty good to me. Honestly don't really care for the SR5 or TRD off-road front end, I think it's a little catfish looking.

To the OP, I would just keep the LTD. I think you would miss some of the more upscale features if you went to one of the other models. And there are a few people here that have built LTDs, and I recently watched a YouTube video where somebody took a stock LTD out on a trail and was very impressed with the way it behaved.

I think you have a perfectly capable vehicle for most of the terrain including everyday use that the majority of us travel. Use it, enjoy it, upgrade it as you feel the need after a few trips. Just another opinion. We will however gladly help you spend bucks on mods!!

I'd like to add that my Limited has seen plenty of action in the Gila Wilderness and also down here in the Floridas. (Smaller mtn. range near Mexican border) I did bury in to the frame once, but perseverance, some brush and A Trac saved the day. No worries, and plenty of pinstripes! :D

The bumpers and side skirts I like look and it follows the frame. I don't need awd, I use 4x4 probably 3% of the time. But id rather not have xreas, or kdss. That's why I have a sr5p.

But its a 4runner, if you have a limited i sugguest feeling it out before you ditch it for another 4runner

Have a rear locker installed on your Limited for $1500-2000. You’d be saving money over trading in and you would have a better rig than any TRD model.

There's always the TRD Sport. Looks like the Limited, without the full time 4WD...not sure if it has xreas.

It does. Takes the worst parts of the SR5 and Limited and combines them. Color matched parts. Xreas. 20” wheels. Part time 4WD. Low bumpers and rocker panels

I think I said in a wrong way.

I like to be in 2wd when not needed. Not waste energy spinning front shaft and related components. I think it would give me little mpg advantage especially on a long trip and less ware (i think).

I just wanted to say I prefer 2wd when 4wd is not needed.

Limited doesn't have AWD. It has full time 4WD. Big difference. If you have full time 4WD with a center differential - why would you give a shit about being able to go into just 2WD? The exact same full time 4WD system has allowed a bunch of Land Cruisers to be driven to the four corners of the earth. I'm sure they were all pissing and moaning about not having 2WD;)

There have been a few people who have driven both limiteds and non-limiteds and have noticed differences in steering in low speed in 2WD.

While true that it is full time 4WD, it behaves exactly the same as AWD for on road performance as far as I know, right?
It is off road performance where the full time 4WD makes a big difference vs AWD
