Sure. Are we talking an actual NATO-style fuel can? Or are you including Bltz, Scepter, Rotopax, etc.?

What trim level of 4Runner? Does it/will it have a roof rack? If so which one? Is there anything you’d like to carry on the roof apart from 5 gallons of fuel?

There are many options. I’ll give you 2.

    1. Get a pair of flat aftermarket crossbars to fit between the stock rails, like those from LFD Offroad. Then get a Jerry can carrier to bolt onto the crossbars. Or, as full 20 liter cans are heavy and tough to lift on and off the roof, you could opt for dual 10 liter cans and carriers.

    2. Get a ladder for the rear hatch and mount a 4 gallon Rotopax. You would want to upgrade the hatch struts as well. This option will allow you to park in a garage, but you may have to remove the Rotopax when it’s full of fuel to allow the hatch to stay open when raised.

    Yup. Google.

Seriously, @Captain Spalding has given you several ideas - take those and do a search.

There is. its a little more spendy than I was thinking but leak proof cans are definitely a must if you're mounting them on a rack above your roof...

    Yes. NATO-style cans are superior.

Benignly curious where you expect your extra fuel might come in handy? Care to share? Maybe some extended overlanding trips?

Don’t get me wrong, we have both a victory4x4 bumper with swingout dual carriers for fuel/water AND a frontrunner dual fuel carrier on our rack. Love the look and love having stout cargo options,

…but i have to say, so far in our travels, spare fuel hasn’t been necessary. (The dual rack mount remains, since it’s so low profile, but the swingaway is in the garage, dismounted to save weight and provide better hatch access.)

After a couple years of trips, i’ve found that our 24gal tank and 13-15mpg fuel ratings get us a pretty good range (300-350miles) even pretty far offroad. Biggest benefit of a couple spare jerrycans, has been being able to bypass uber-expensive gas stops.

trying to decide if i’m going to slim down our loadout to just one 5 gallon can for the truck and then one 1 gallon “mixer” jug for our chainsaw if we bring it along on some trips.
