    Good day fellow 4Runner owners,

The '01 4Runner we purchased suffers from the 4WD system not changing from 2H to 4H or back. I've found videos on YouTube that address this, and I'm investigating the actuators in both the transfer case and the front Diff. My question for you all here is about what appears to be a vacuum hose that terminates somewhere at the transfer case hanging loose because the hose has rotted at its end. The issue is I can't figure out where this hose originates from (assuming somewhere in the engine bay) and where on the transfer case is terminates. It appears there is a post on the actuator where a hose might connect, but not sure if this is the right place. I haven't been able to find any information about vacuum hoses going to the transfer case. Can someone provide some insight please?

I can get under there and post some photos if that helps.

    Thanks all for your help!

    Jonathan

    Hi all,

A friend and I figured this out. There's a breather hose that runs from the top of the transfer case to the side of the actuator. The fitting on the actuator was plugged up with gunk, so we had to clean it out. We completely disassembled the actuator anyway, and it was a mess. Water had penetrated the housing (likely through the breather hose fitting) and corroded the electrical connections inside the actuator. I'm not sure its salvageable. I was getting intermittent continuity from the circular connections. More to come here.

We also think there's a problem with the ACC actuator on the front diff. We're tackling that next, so I'll let you all know how that goes.

    Take care,

    Jonathan
