    Hey all,

I have a 2005 4runner that's experiencing some timing retardation as well as knocking/ rattling noises when I step on the gas. I've replaced the timing chain and knock sensors and done an inspection of the exhaust system but I can't seem to find the culprit. My next guess is the timing camshaft actuator. If you guys have any recommendations please let me know!:p

You say you checked the exhaust system...did you check all the heat shields for being somewhat loose, many have had this issue of them making a rattling sound.

Yes, I can't find anything thats loose. I've replaced the rear exhaust cap which used to rattle but it sounds like it's coming from the front of the car.

Does the sound change ONLY when you step on the accelerator or just when youre moving?
