Hi, just picked up my 23 Solar Octane TRD Pro. I need to mod it now! Wondering if I can put 185 70/R17’s on now with stock suspension or do I need to lift it first?

I tried without lift but failed. It's just a theory some of the folks argue on this forum that you don't need a lift. Add a lift like Eibach or Wescott along with 285s -> Do some plastics trimming -> You are good. Some shops will do the trimming for you.

Here's my attempt. I only did a 1/2 lift and it barely clears. I might need more for offroad. Haven't tested my setup yet.

185's are going to be real small, you'd probably be the first to run that size.

Here's a comparison, 185's on the left and stock size on the right

Hmmm... I'd run them on the rear only to get rid of the factory rake. ;)

LOL! I’m not that new just have fat fingers! I have 2008 and 2014 FJs with 285’s but they are both running Fox 2.5’s. Guess I need to lift the truck before the 285’s.

You're probably going to need to trim some plastic, regardless of lift. Lift doesn't clear tires unless you never leave pavement.

Bummer. FJs didn’t need anything trimming. I guess the 4R has a smaller wheel well.

congrats and gorgeous!!! Youre gonna hear a lot of opinions here about 285/70/17s on TRDs. The only thing tou can do is try it and and go from there.

i did a 2” lift of my stock rimmed 2011 SR5 and 2022 Trail and they cleared just fine, but you have TRD rims so who knows. P

Hold up, are you insinuating that I didn't understand that a 185 series tire wasn't a viable option and that I actually posted the comparison chart seriously and unironically... to a member with one post?

Jokes aside, it does seem to depend on vehicle from the different bits of info out there. The pro wheels protrude a bit more than the offroad wheels which will make them slightly less ideal.

The reason people say you don't need a lift is because even with a lift, with flex the tire would end up in pre-lift positions so it shouldn't really make a difference.

I believe general consensus is that:
    1. A good alignment (3.5+ degrees castor) will help clear mud flaps and prevent need for body mount chop (BMC). Mud flaps may need to be flattened/massaged with heat gun
    2. Because of the increased castor, you will hit the fender liner/bumper cover up front so a fender liner mod and some trimming will most likely be required

I have about +2-2.5" up front and needed the fender liner nip/tuck and haven't hit mud flaps or body mount yet but it hasn't really been flexed enough for me to know. Not sure if lift was needed.

Well, you saw how I first replied to the new members post about the tire question. I didn’t go posting a silly comparison chart to poke fun at him on his first introduction to us.

    Sorry for jumping on you.

Mountain Dew was the drug of choice in my first band. We were all about caffeine. Jolt is still better, but you can't find that shit anywhere anymore.

I might feel stupid when you answer, but, what are MD and NC? Or, are you referring to Maryland and North Carolina?

I'd almost drive there to get some! :D

Pepsi had that 1893, or whatever it was for awhile, and it was the closest thing to Jolt I've tasted. I wish they'd bring it back.

Welcome from Wisconsin! Get the 'trimmer' out, for our 275's we did the inner fender liner 'push', and nothing rubbed until we went on some terrain, get the trimmer out.

Sun Drop is another one with an outrageous amount of caffine and closer in color to Mountain Dew. Thats what I drink when in NC on vacation.
    • Sun Drop (green can/label, 64 mg caffeine per 12 fl oz can; 105 mg caffeine per 20 fl oz bottle)

I might have to take a detour through NC on my next Florida trip. OTOH, it says Amazon also, but Amazon doesn't have any. :notsure:

I checked a Dollar General awhile back in my area, and found nothing.
