Intermittent reverse camera

2014 SR5 reverse camera gone intermittent. Got frustrated so started looking for problems.
Discovered it works when in reverse (obviously) and I raise the tailgate. Bad connection? Where? Any ideas? Thanks.

 

So your camera works when in reverse? But not when you open tailgate?

Ok, let me try again. With engine running, parking brake engaged, transmission in reverse, and dashboard screen black:
I raised the tailgate and screen came on picturing me dangerously behind the car.
Got it? Sorry I have no sense of humor today, and frustrated with my longtime 4Runner.

Are you saying that the reverse camera only works when the hatch is open?

If the hatch is open and you shift into reverse does it work?

If the hatch is closed it doesn't work but opening the hatch it does work?
