Getting ORP with KDSS and have been looking at sliders. I will not be doing any heavy bashing, but the 5 or 6 times a year I go out on the trails I also don't want to worry about accidentally getting caught up on a rock or tree stump. These slides include a step ledge which I really like and will honestly use more than "sliders" (and are much lighter). Just curious on what everyone's thought and experience is with these, and hopefully some insight on if they still provide the protection I am looking for?

I went with DOM steel Sliders from 4xInnovations because I wanted maximum protection.

Aluminum will gouge on a sharp surface.

Any protection is better than no protection. Good quality steel sliders will hold up better and longer. Just keep in mind that once that aluminum is heavily damaged, a repair may not be possible. Steel is easier to work with if damaged.

Just chiming in... I got the Greenlane STEP SLIDERS and think they are perfect for me.
First, these are step sliders, so double as a very usable step as well as offering protection.
As much protection as steel? NO! But for those of us that are not hard core off roaders, and just want something MUCH beefier than running boards, these are the ticket.
They are extremely well built with some of the best welds I've seen. They came from Canada mummified in bubble wrap and were in perfect condition.
Unlike running boards they bolt to the frame, not the body, so are very rigid.
For me, I wanted some protection from a slow speed slide off a snowy/muddy road and I think I got that with the Greenlane.
Plus they weigh about half the steel ones.
Were very easy to install and all bolt holes were in correct location. I have KDSS and that was a little bit of a struggle, but not a biggie. Instructions are excellent.
Personally, I am very pleased with my decision... and they look great! 20230304_122455 (3).jpg

    Your 4r looks awesome!
The greenlane sliders are around the same price point as the RSG sliders so I'm debating which one to get.
Did you have to pay any extra customs/taxes/duties fees when importing them into the US?

Right now I have HREW steel sliders which are technically less weight than DOM steel sliders.

I like to learn about aluminum sliders with top plate and kickout. Like to know how much of weight difference between HREW with top-plate and kickout (not DOM) vs Aluminum. So far I haven't put lot of weight on my sliders other than just scraping. So I may not need a super strong slider for my easy offroad needs. But I have used the hi-lift jack and it did push my HREW slider close to the body. I wonder if aluminum sliders can be used with the hi-lift jack?

Love to hear more about aluminum sliders

I’m thinking about these as well from Greenlane. I was originally considering RSG zero degree, with kickout and grippy top plate, but that will add 120 lbs, and I don’t plan on rock crawling only overlanding.

Underneath I will upgrade my fuel tank skid at one point. But I already have RCI diff (steel), RCI transmission skid (steel), RCI cat shields (aluminum) = 62 lbs. Add my “still to be installed” roof rack, installed interior molle panels w/shelf, bigger tires and it will be 300 lbs heavier.

Weight starts to add up quickly on these builds, so have to make trade offs for real world usage.

No extra customs duties, though I did get a weird notice from UPS that said I owed them 60 bucks for customs duties, but I never paid it and the next thing I knew they were delivered. I think Greenlane must have paid it. Anyway, it was a breeze and only took about 12 days from order to delivery.

They weigh about 28Lbs each, but the material is not lightweight or thin wall.

I don't think you should use these for a jack point... they are cantilevered pretty far out from the frame. I believe Greenlane says that on their website.

Greenlane does not recommend using a hi lift jack with their sliders.

yeah, I just saw that. But 25lbs is very tempting for a light duty user like myself now. May be use a good bottle jack might be an alternative.

Greenlane is currently doing a 10% off. I filled out a cart - with shipping, GST & CAD to USD conversion - $1010.00. Not in the market, but interesting.

How on earth did our parents and grandparents camp without sliders and skids on their cars?

My parents are WAY smarter than me. They have a “let’s park and walk” while my brother and I have an 80’s kid mentality of “what stupid shit can we do in this thing”.

do you mind measuring how wide these are at the front a rear door with pics? To get an idea how they function as a step.

these are steps or running boards. sliders need to be able to support the weight of the truck and slide over/past the obstacle. aluminum isnt ideal for either of those.

When I go out I call it camping. I would feel like a total douche and want to punch myself in the nuts if I ever told anyone "I'm going overlanding"

There’s an explanation of overlanding on Wikipedia.

Overlanding or 4WD Touring is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, but not exclusively, it is accomplished with mechanized off-road capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping, often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries.”

Just getting back to the person who asked about the width of the Greenlane step sliders and how useful they are as a step.
When looking straight down they appear to project out about 4 inches, but because you can tuck your toes under a bit, the effective width for stepping on is 5.5. inches. I am 6-2 so only use them when loading the roof rack (very handy!), but my wife is 5 ft and uses them every time. They are higher than running boards. With my stock ORP suspension the top surface is 15.5 inches off the ground.
I have no reservations in recommending them as a step, in addition to the protection they provide.

With my wide (6 inches) OEM plastic running boards I notice they act as good mud protectors. The underside of them catch huge amounts of sticky mud and keep it from hitting the lower door panels. Do your Greenlanes do that? Or does some mud and dirt make it through the perforations?

I've only been in real mud for a short while... and did not have any problem like that. They are higher up than running boards and the mud flaps took the brunt of the flying mud.

I had the RSG sliders on my 2018 and they worked great for protection on a couple of knarly Colorado trails. I now have a 2022 and stumbled on a deal on a 2nd hand set of Greenlane rails. I’m over the difficult rock crawling I used to do and believe the aluminum rails will be adequate for the Alpine loop, Imogene pass and such in the San Juans. Just got back from Moab. They work great for me and get a thumbs up on quality. Just know your limitations.

I also have the Greenlane aluminum sliders and been happy with them. I’m not doing hardcore rock crawling so these suit my needs. Obviously not as strong as steel but much lighter. Stronger than running boards.

I can understand that perspective, especially if using a tent on the ground. The local group I interactive don’t call it camping at all, although a couple joke it’s glamping. The local shows all refer to it as overlanding, but if I’m talking to friends not familiar with the idea at all I just “I’m going out off the beat and path”. Funny enough my 90 yr old uncle calls it overlanding as he would do that on his free time when stationed in Northern Africa and south Asia, as most trips had no roads and they had access to military trucks.
