Previous owner cut parking brake cable because of seizing

Hey! I just bought a 3rd gen 4runner that I am currently fixing up to get safetied. The guy I bought it from said his brakes seized last winter so he cut the parking line? Is it a common issue in older 3rd gen 4runners for the parking brake to seize? I hear it could be due to the cable holdings. No idea why this guy would just cut his parking brake cable without knowing more.

 

Ugh. He cut the emergency brake cable? Why do idiots do things like that?

No, it's not common. But it is possible.

First of all, I don't see how the e-brake line would freeze up and if it was related to that, you're looking at the rear brakes. They are typical drum brakes so not hard to work on.

 

No idea, he talked about how he's an electrical engineer so maybe cutting wires is just what they do haha.

I don't really see how the cable could be the problem either? I talked to some people at the parts department of my Toyota dealership and they said they think its the actual cable holdings corroding away.

Hope its not that haha.

 

The cable pulls on the rear brake shoes to hold the drums. I suppose it's possible it was hanging up but not sure how as it's a pretty straight shot from the ebrake lever to the rear drums. I would think the hangup would be at the rear brakes.

But the fix isn't to cut the cable...it's to find out where it's hanging up and grease it.
