Pretty stinky now after alot of dead animals.
2nd go! retracted nice as should but when it goes up it continues to make gear noise as if motor or gear is grinding . Damn it. Yes it was OEM. Good to return .Id like to do away with the whole motor and put whip type but do not want to sacrifices reception quality. I took out motor and cleaned. Tried again. I know i can disconnect power only , tape and protect adaptor ends. How about a good whip replacement? Leave motor alone.

I've read enough about how to replace mass and check motor. Needle nose pliers work best t to remove retaining cap. I've seen a few goofballs scratch or gouge up paint with hammer and screw driver.

I've delt with the same problem, retracts fine but grinds when it extends. Took it apart and found no obvious damage, and nothing I did could fix it (OEM mast). I replaced the motor with a different one, but if you don't want a motor than the Taco Whip mod replaces the power antenna with a flexible one that Toyota used on the Tacomas of the era. It'll give just as good reception.

But be prepared, because you'll have to route a new antenna cord because Toyota made it one piece with the motor. You can't cut and splice the cord, it's shielded and you wont get good sound quality.
