From what I have heard, dealerships are loving not having to go back and forth on the price. Saves them time, one price is it, and requires less employees. My guess is that they want it stay that way.

They will, until one manufacturer decides they want more sales and ups the inventory and then others will follow. This will lead to dealerships having inventory on the lot they want moved and will start the same games as before. I think this is at least a few years away, then memories will fade.

Currently, yes they are making what they can, in fact I just read something about production being stopped on a few domestic truck models due to shortages. But, once this gets sorted out manufacturers/dealerships will keep lots scarce. But someone will go against the grain after awhile and start packing the lots which will force the hand of others. As a consumer, this will benefit us, until then we are at their mercy.

I'm still not understanding what grain you are talking about.

I guarantee the first manufacturer that can pump out vehicles will do so. Not to go against the grain but to sell them damn vehicles.

I think dealerships are making more per vehicle right now, and will try to keep that trend going. Not to mention the order direct from the manufacture that some are trying. I think dealerships have seen how to reduce overhead.

Well Toyota here is all owned by Servco.

    They only sell at MSRP.

So not all dealerships are making money. And if you know Hawaii everywhere you look is a Toyota.

Always MSRP. Never had to deal with dealer markup.

If you know the sales guy he can give you his discount.

They also own the Lexus's here.

I hadn’t paid over MSRP precovid, was always a deal to be found. Not when I got 2022, the deal was MSRP. And I believe this was the case every where, well most every where. Folks showed what they would pay for new vehicles and thus why markups are still happening. Anyone with half a brain running a dealership should have learned how their lack of supply increased what folks would be willing to pay.

kind of funny we are talking about this today, as I final got a 500 deposit back that I placed summer of 21. They never filled my order, as I was very clear I wouldn’t pay over MSRP. And this is a dealership I knew a some folks at, and had bought multiple vehicles at in the past, including my first Toyota truck, which the owner himself worked the deal out with me. While trying to get this recent vehicle, they would only offer me things that someone backed out of at the last minute and nothing even remotely close to what I was asking for. So I worked every dealership based on distance, until drove north an hour and a half to get my MSRP deal.

remember pre COVID, vehicles on the lot cost dealerships money, they were motivated to move them.

Yeah, the dealerships are making more per vehicle but the manufacturers are not so they really have no incentive to curb production. In fact, manufacturers are getting a black eye over dealers charging over MSRP so they actually have incentive to produce more to stop that practice (because people see the dealer charging more and blame the manufacturer not realizing that the dealers are independent)
