My dealer says it is pre-programmed for your 4 Runner when you receive it. I don’t know if it’s actually true. Seems to me if they know the VIN, it should be able to be pre-programmed

All analog Toyotas, for use in warzones. No more electronic BS, and you can start them with a couple of pliers!!! :) ;)

rmiked - yeah, that makes sense. I assume the dealership sends something back to Toyota when they deliver a vehicle to a buyer with only one key fob - so they should have your name, address, VIN, etc... But this goes back to my overall frustration related to the communication from Toyota on this 1 key fob issue. On the letter from Toyota to the dealers at the top of this discussion it says that all of us that got only 1 fob will be notified by mail when fobs are available and we'll have to take our original key fob to a dealer to get the 2nd one programmed. The salesperson I dealt with told us that Toyota would mail the 2nd key fob to us. Hence my overall dissatisfaction with the communication from Toyota on this issue. Am told Toyota will mail me the 2nd key fob, then see a letter from Toyota Quality to the dealers that says I'll be notified by mail when I can go to my local dealer and get a 2nd key fob? I don't want you guys to think I'm beating a dead horse here - and after this post I will leave it at that. I'm really not that concerned as I don't think I will lose/damage my key fob before I actually do get the 2nd one - and I do have faith that Toyota will get us the 2nd key fob. I'm even fine with going to my local dealer to get the 2nd fob rather than having it mailed to me - in the grand scheme of things that is not much of an inconvenience to deal with. I'll end on this - maybe describing myself as being dissatisfied over this situation is an incorrect description. I am more than satisfied with my 2023 4Runner - love it. Maybe "surprised" is a better term for how I feel about this situation. I'm sure that realizing the chip shortage would limit the number of key fobs that could be shipped with new vehicles was probably sudden and unplanned for Toyota. I can envision them making a quick decision to ship only 1 fob in order to keep shipping new vehicles - would have made the same decision. But within a week of making that decision they had to have worked out how they were going to deliver the 2nd fob to buyers that only got 1 - even if they didn't yet know when they would be available. It just surprises me that they apparently went multiple months in this fob shortage situation and just let the dealerships deal with what was communicated to buyers.

I took delivery 1/6/2023. After leaving the dealership, realized I only had one key, called, they said look at the sticker on the window and said I would get the second key later. OK, I understand there is a chip shortage, it is what it is. No estimate on when the second key would come. Heard April on here. Now someone posted above a Toyota letter saying cars produced since Jan (?) are getting both keys, and the poor schmucks who were shorted might get there's this summer. THAT IS TOTAL BULLSHIT!!! Keep shorting the new deliveries until you catch up and catch up those of us who got shorted before first. My initial understanding of the chip shortage has now turned to anger.

No, so far it hasn't affected me and no, it would be extremely rare for me to lose or badly misplace my key. However, should that happen, I suddenly have a car that is completely useless until I get to a dealer and pay through the nose for a new key. Can't have wifey loan me her key or even bring it to me if I'm stranded.

Toyota is making some very bad calculations with this whole fiasco.

Why would they keep shorting folks. Just to make it a bigger mess?
At least they ship the whole vehicle, I think some other manufacturers are shipping vehicles that don't have all the features.

Saw my sales manager today. He took delivery of a new Tundra in December and has only 1 fob. He looked up my VIN on my ORP and said build date 2/17. If that means completed in Japan 2/17, I have a hard time believing I will get it 3/25, which is when his info says arriving at dealer. Wonder if “build date” is when it arrives at Port? Well, it will arrive when it does and I will get either 1 fob or 2. I knew about the fob issue from info here (forum) before I agreed to place deposit. So I’m not upset. But if I had already taken delivery, like some of you, and customers were getting 2 fobs buying after me, I would feel mistreated.

Spare parts, you are correct. GM is shipping vehicles without all the features. They identify it on sticker and give a $50 credit for each microchip missing. They claim to have a plan for reinstating some of those features. I personally read a GM truck sticker that stated the “cylinder de-activation” feature was missing and showed $50 credit. With the class action lawsuit related to cylinder de-activation, it’s probably good that feature was defeated.

VCM on Honda Pilots were a real mess too. The truck would shake badly during cylinder deactivation leading to fouled plugs and bad pistons.

Because we already paid for our vehicles and we should be taken care of first.

So it’s ok to keep people feeling like you folks do?
In this case I’d want to stop leak (shipping with 1 FOB) and go back and fix what you screwed up. And I can’t see any other way for Toyota to handle this, they surely don’t want to piss more folks off. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have my beef with them, but I can completely understand how they are handling this.

They should’ve just been like Ford and GM. “We decided not to give you a second fob but will give you a $50 microchip credit. Maybe we will consider fixing this in the future. If you don’t buy it, I have a line of people that will.”

Took delivery of my Pro in early February and am in the same boat here. Has anyone looked into parts availability and cost locally with their dealer as if you were going to proceed with customer pay to see what it would cost and if they're available?

I want to better put in context my earlier post about how easy it was to get my second key FOB. It was remarkably easy but the guy behind the parts counter was very surprised it was in stock, he also commented on the wait time others were experiencing for their cars. It might have been a model VIN thing but my FOB was easy to get. As far as price $320 FOB + $80 Programming =$400 As far as coming preprogrammed by VIN, I don’t think that is the case because my vehicle spent 30-45 minutes (long enough for me to get Covid in the waiting room…) with a tech before being pulled around front. I know on Lexus it’s a series of pushing the start button twice holding down FOB buttons, etc…, etc…. The good news is the new FOB works …and I’m satisfied. And if anyone cares I feel good this AM but that was my first Covid experience which sucked, I knew to leave that waiting room when all the people were hacking and snotting but I didn’t want to look pretentious. Moral of that story- Trust your instincts!

If I trusted my instincts, I’d find a new job. Both my wife and I work in schools, needless to say, we have stopped counting the number of times we have or think we have had COVID. I recently read an article that stated about 25% of parents we not truthful about their child’s status during the heyday of it all, I bet that’s a larger percentage now that we are “normal”.

Do you know which port yours went through?
Mine is in Portland and I’m hoping it doesn’t meet the same delays you’ve encountered.

It was processed through the Portland port before being loaded onto a BNSF train. It was finally unloaded from the train yesterday and hit rail depart status. Now just waiting for it to get loaded onto a truck and to the dealer. Should be there sometime next week.

Is this Portland Oregon or Maine? I didn't have a delay like that and my 4r arrived in port after yours.... Oregon that is.

Ya, I know. I did my part, and my wife did hers plus a few. But I don’t want to derail or start a mess.

Oregon is my guess, as vehicles are trucked into Maine as far as I know.

Asking because mine came to port Jan 19, left end of January and I had it first week of Feb. But it didn't go by train anywhere.....I live close to Portland.... bought it in Vancouver. Maybe the train was the hold up.

Hello everybody. This is my 1st post. My wife and I just bought a used 2022 T4R a week ago. It came with only 1 key fob. I bought a 2nd one on eBay and when I took it to a local locksmith, they told me it can't be programmed unless the vehicle is pre 2019 because Toyota locked the codes and nobody has been able to crack those codes just yet. I called a 2nd locksmith, and they told me the same thing.

Return the Ebay Key and order one through dealership.
    Since you have one already.
Probability of losing it is very low.

You should be happy to hear that the 2022 key had been locked.
