Odd power train options. Didn’t know there would be 4 of them?

Turbo only available on the BRO? That sucks! Hopefully the 4Runner gets a better selection. If the next generation 4Runner only came with those options listed, a lot of people here will not want to buy them.

    I agree.

I'm sure these motor decisions are mainly weight based. With the Tacoma being lighter, it gets the less powerful options listed above.

I think the heavier 4Runner sees the 2.4L Turbo standard and a hybrid option that is still not exactly known. Hybrid Max sounds awesome but there could be complications configuring it from unibody to a framed vehicle......so what exactly the hybrid option is for the 4Runner is still up in the air.

Does anyone have experience with resale value and what happens to hybrid vehicle that has some miles on it and it’s time to trade it in?

sounds like most of these hybrid batteries are good for 7_10 years and then need to be replaced for around $7-9k. I wonder if dealers will subtract that cost of putting in a fresh battery off your car value

point being I’d get maybe much less on my trade in than similar non hybrid vehicle version. Makes me think I’d prefer to take my chances with the turbo engine

I see a constant stream of high mileage Priuses listed on Marketplace, so they DO last. They also seem to not be dirt cheap, so there IS some resale there. Health of the battery though, who knows?

I think either model will have high resale just by virtue of being a T4R. And who knows what fuel prices will be in the future, big increases could bring increased demand for the hybrid.

I do believe for the person who wants to buy a new vehicle and keep it 10+ years, there may have to be a different way of thinking. I definitely don't think that's prudent with a BEV. Maybe ten years with a hybrid, but I too would be worried about battery life. I think the days of buying a vehicle and running it into the ground over 20 years are over. This is what alarms me most about EVs, as I tend to keep vehicles for a long time. My 4R is ten years old, really no reason (other than New England) that it shouldn't live another 10+ years.

I think for max resale, trading every 3-5 years or so may be the sweet spot.

Then again, a vehicle is not an investment, resale shouldn't be the only factor. A ten year old depreciating Toyota is still probably going to be better off than a lot of other makes in that situation. One of my fav new hybrid vehicles right now is the Kia Sportage Hybrid, but I'm not owning one for ten years, haha.

I think I want to stick with ICE (and beaters) for as long as I can. I do not want to get into another car payment situation anytime soon, I'm already too beaten down by the state of the housing market.

That's what I initially thought too. But.......

when you consider that Tacoma engine choices are more closely aligned with the Camry than they are with the 4Runner, it begins to make more sense.

let’s hope they keep kicking that can down the road. No need to “update” (ruin) the 4runner

If the newer version is going to be more off-road oriented to compete with the Bronco, I'm ready for it whenever. The 5th gen certainly has its charm, but I don't think an update will ruin it. After all, the 5 gen was an update of the 4th gen, and is certainly more popular.

    Thanks for posting.

I will say that motor trend doesn't have the best track record with these sorts of predictions, so I'm going to point out what I think is wrong based off the info I've been hearing:

The rendering is simply speculation. Very few people know what the 6th gen will actually look like.

There has been absolutely nothing about a V6 hybrid from any reputable sources. Reputable sources have been saying a 4cyl hybrid.

It won't be closely related to the Tacoma. Those two will mostly have very different powertrains due to their differences in weight. Tacoma Pro might get an upgraded motor (2.4 Turbo) that is shared with the heavier 4Runner.

Hybrid Max for the 4Runner is a possibility, but there continues to be a lot of info swirling around that there will be something different or unique about it, so it might not exactly be the hybrid max as well. It definitely will not be a V6 hybrid max.

The 4Runner will not be out Q2 of 2024. More like Q3.

Talked to my dealer GM buddy again the other day, he said there’s a prototype floating around that some of the higher level folks have seen. He said it looks just like a mini sequoia, inside and out. We’ll see when some photos of that leak out :boink:

I like the front end of the sequoia a lot. Ass end looks like ass tho.

Hopefully the 6th gen retains the rear window that rolls down.

    Agreed, agreed, and agreed!

And, hopefully Toyota realizes how much we love that rear window!

Yeah, lots of suspense lol. I’m not looking to replace my 4runner until it’s well and used up, but it would be nice to know I’ll have decent replacement options.

Hopefully they can hit this one out of the park so it has 8-10 years of history behind it when Im ready to buy lol

A bit of bad news regarding the new Land Cruiser coming to the US/Canada.......

It was supposed to be available in December 2023 but had been delayed.

It now looks like it will launch March/April 2024 which would most likely push back any teasers expected this June.

In other news, keep an eye out for the first glimpse of the 2024 Tacoma. It's possible it's unveiled on or around April 7th at the New York International Auto Show.

Here is what I've been able to piece together from multiple sources.

The 6th gen 4Runner design will be evolutionary, not Retro, similar to how the new Tacoma design is evolutionary from its previous model.

The 2025 4Runner has been delayed some more, not unexpected for new development.

The Reveal should be in the spring 2024 time frame.

Start of production should be in the summer of 2024 time frame.

First delivers launch should be in the fall of 2024 time frame.
