Picking up my first 4Runner this Saturday. 2023 sr5p. The dealer should check it over and have it ready, but is there anything that I should look at before I drive it home?

    Thanks

I would just say drive it to make sure there isn’t anything wrong with the truck and have the sales person go over everything with you. My sales guy just wanted me out of there. He didn’t even go over the checklist they include with the user manual etc. I learned a lot about the truck from this forum, so thanks to everyone in the forum. The only weird thing I experienced was white sticky stuff on my driver rear door handle. Other then that, I love my 4R.
    Congrats and hope you enjoy!

Test drive very early in the cold morning.
Come back again next day for another road test drive without the radios/ACs on.
Salesman wants you out of there quickly to get the next customer walking through the door.

I would include function checking 4wd engagement, 4lo, and lockers if applicable. The only thing, is make sure you know how to do that without damaging anything (like engaging while turning, or turning at all on dry surfaces). So basically, do it straight, on a parking lot.

Idk if it's a thing anymore, but ask to talk to the PDI tech. Ask him what he went over and see if he hit everything on the checklist. Toyota here, the techs actually send a video when working on your truck.

May not be a thing anymore for security but worth a shot.

I remember someone a year or two ago here suggested taking for a quick drive and make sure the steering wheel is aligned properly and nothing pulls to one side.

Also look underneath it to make sure no major scrapes or scratches from shipping.

I had some type of yellow marker on my roof rack as well. It’s some type of placement mark. It came off easily with some cleanser.

Also mine I noticed after a few days had some sticky residue leftover from the plastic used in shipping. It came off easily but I just needed to see it in different lightings.

I would consider treating the frame right away if you can. There are probably a few rust spots on welds. Not a big deal nature of the beast. Just get the frame treated since she is new.

Enjoy it! We are all pretty fortunate to be able to own one of these machines.

Tell them not to run it through their sandpaper wash where they use a shop broom to wash your vehicle. Those workers are the lowest paid and could careless about your vehicle.

Also, make sure it has a full tank of gas.

One more idea ask for a bottle of touch up paint while you are there.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll be sure to drive it before I leave town. Being sure the alignment is good, tires are balanced and 4wd is working. Also looking things over for any cosmetic issues. I don't want to make to many trips back to the dealer, almost a 400 mile trip there and back.

Need to get it home and level it, get new wheels on and apply surface shield to the frame.

One closer, one about the same distance. The one 20miles down the highway didn't seem too interested in finding me a 4Runner.

Check the tire pressure. My tires were at 55 psi when I drove it off the lot. Also make sure the parking brake will hold the truck on a grade. Mine had never been adjusted.

But you can use them if there are any issues. No need to drive 400 miles to get an issue fixed. I have a dealership 5 to 10 minutes from my house, and they had 6 months to try and find my runner, I ended up driving a couple hours to get it and I would still use my local dealership if issues arise.

    Yes that's true.

Hopefully it doesn't need to go in.

I may use them for an alignment after the level.

Make sure they understand how happy you won't be if you have to make a second 400-mile trip for something they shouldn't have missed on your first trip.

    And as everyone says, enjoy!

Go over the whole truck looking for door dings, scratches, and paint flaws. I did a really stupid thing and picked up my new '20 right after a light rain. After getting it home I noticed a door ding and a scratch on the driver's door. Although the dealer promised to fix it, months of hounding them for an appointment resulted in nothing but frustration so I gave up. Still pisses me off sometimes.

Ditto. I drove a few hundred miles before realizing I was over 50 psi. Also wish I’d flagged the parking brake right away.

Since I bought my 2019 back in 2019, I've been back to that dealer twice - one of two in town, and another 60 miles from me. 1st 'ToyotaCare' visit which was basically topping off fluids and rotating tires, and once after my leveling lift for an alignment, which did turn out good.

I passed on the rest of the ToyotaCare visits. They don't, really.
