It looks difficult with all the wiring; I'm looking for first-hand experience though.

From the instructions, it looks pretty straight forward but does require dealer programming.

No need for the cost and hassle of OEM and there are several aftermarket offerings that don't use the OBD port. No wire splicing, completely plug-n-play. One plug under the steering column, one plug above the left kick panel. It pigtails into place.

I went with this one, it took 20 minutes and works perfectly. You can choose to add a cell module that allows it to start/stop, lock/unlock from an app.

Remote start is the only thing I did not do on my 4runner (as in paid the dealer to do instead of me doing it). I initially did it myself with a reputable aftermarket brand. It worked. Worked well. Then 2 weeks later the cars dash wouldn't turn off. Or the car wouldn't start. Or wouldn't unlock. Random crazy shit.

I pulled the battery for a hard reset and it worked for about 4 weeks no issues then stranded my wife somewhere for 30 minutes until it decided to work.

So I ripped it out and took it to the dealer and had them install a factory one.

Went through my email...I had a remote start from 12 Volt Solutions.

The 4runner is my wife's daily driver and she loves the remote start. She goes to work at 5am and the car and seats are nice and toasty for her before she gets in.

Absolutely 0 issues with the dealer installed factory one.

I had an OEM remote start installed on my 2016 Limited with zero issues. I added it when preferencing the car, so not sure if it was port-installed or factory-installed. It was definitely not a dealer-installed option.

Don't let the one story of failed hardware and/or possibly a bad installation steer you away from aftermarket. The one I linked you to doesn't use the OBD port, it's under $200, installs in minutes and best of all it uses the factory key fob.

    Not saying they should.

But it's the first time in my life I've installed something incorrectly and haven't been able to fix. But it was plug and play. You literally can't install it incorrectly. It was clearly buggy firmware from that vendor. Just saying. Maybe stay away from that vendor.
