Another click-bait hot take on the 5th gen

    https://www.motorbiscuit.com/worst-2023-midsize-suv-according-to-us-news/

The title is obviously click-bait, as the writer quickly back tracks. Plus, according to the article, the Nissan Murano is considered a mid-size SUV.

Then they point out that it gets worse mileage than some trucks. Well, yeah.. It's probably the only true mid-size SUV left, as everything else is probably Unibody. A possible exception would be the Wrangler, but I don't know if that's in the same category.

Anyway, I know we love these types of silly articles here. So, I figured I'd share. :D

Lmao! Did you know the Camry gets better mpgs compared to the 4runner? (Exaggerated to make a point)

    Haha!

Most of the 4Runner's "competition" is probably more comparable to a Camry than a 4Runner.

I'm sure a lot of people are looking forward to a more fuel efficient 6th gen. But, if it comes at the cost of reliability, a lot of people will be disappointed. I certainly don't envy the folks in charge of developing the next version. It's a tall order to fill!

Replacing a known quantity that’s tried and true with a passionate following is a tough proposition. I think at least for the 1st year of the Gen 6 there will be a lot of nervous hesitation, possibly apprehension due to what was seen with the Tundra.

With respect to the article, it seems like one of those garbage AI generated pieces or just incompetence of someone discussing a topic they know little about. A good laugh nonetheless.

There's so many generic sources that put out these cut and paste articles, I don't even bother reading any of them. Wouldn't be surprised if most of these are generated by chatGPT.

Great! If they keep that up, maybe 4Runners won’t be so hard to find for those who really want them. Then, dealers won’t have the leverage to mark them up thousands of dollars.

On a side note, Jeeps are cool and all that, but I’ll never own another Chrysler product, the scars run too deep. :(

Oh, good point! Maybe a lot of these articles are secretly created by 4Runner enthusiasts trying to lower prices. :spy:

I find it hard to take any auto journalism seriously since they need early access to vehicles, so they don’t criticize them (ex. Kia reviewers not talking about vehicle fires). I like reviewers that look at used cars as they are not beholden to anyone.

For vehicles, we need two type of review categories. Long term ownership and short term ownership. On the former, 4Runners come out on top, that’s why I bought mine … 10+yr plus ownership plan.

These things are written by the same people who want to get rid of gas stoves and gas water heaters and do not work within the realm of practicality.

I tease my buddy and his Ford when his touch screen fails and he calls saying the heated seat and heat are stuck on high in August lol. Remember those knobs mine work great every time :)

At least during an extended power outage after an ice storm I could still cook a few things and take a hot shower. The 4R starts right up to get me to another town to get some food.

I will gladly pay for gas and reliability any day. Trust me the incremental cost of gas over the years of ownership would be negligible compared to the time and hassle spent trying to get other cars repaired I’ve been there and done that.

Long live the 5th Gen 4Runner.

Did your buddy try pulling the fuse for the heated seats?

I haven't paid much attention to the gas stove thing. I'd prefer a gas stove as well.

I don’t recall if he did but touch screen functionality did not work. Luckily he had a few months of warranty left and they replaced the whole screen. I just tease him as he loves all this new tech. I am not against it totally at all.

But having a screen control so much functionality seems like putting many eggs in one basket for me. I like knobs not much to break.

These 4Rs are hot. Yesterday after getting power back I went to the market and Toyota dealer is next store. I popped in and saw a used SR5 2020 for sale. I was looking at it outside when a sales person came with a young couple to take it for a ride, Then there was another guy in line waiting to test drive the same vehicle. Yeah it’s the worst lol with an awful reputation whatever

I’m sure that’s true, but they are quoting a reliable (seemingly) source: U.S. News & World Report.

The 4runner has been getting pooped on for years, being called a dinosaur due to its lack of tech and comfort, as well as poor fuel economy and power due to old school drive train combo. The articles do usually mention that the lack of new crap being thrown at it every couple of years like other SUVs also ranks it the most reliable for over a decade.

It's articles like these that made me want a 4runner and why I bought my first in 2019. I'd been driving Jeep Grand Cherokees for almost 20 years before that but after the issues I had with the 2014, this was the exact vehicle I was looking for because they don't really exist anymore.

    Very happy with my decision.

Such a poorly written article. The best of the worst: “Even the rear-wheel drive model still has some off-roading potential thanks to its two-speed transfer case.” “…the TRD Off-Road has the same equipment at a much cheaper price. You can also get this trim with an adjustable air suspension.” o_O

I only pay attention to anything from journalists that can actually get their hands on the vehicle. The only ones that I've really been paying attention to for a Toyota stuff are basically TFL and TRD Jon. Not that anyone here really cares about it, but TRD Jon was at the Grand Highlander release recently, and was live streaming and answering viewer questions. I actually made a few comments myself and he directly addressed them.
