Good morning 4Runner crew. I just got the call from the dealership that they were allocated a 4Runner TRD ORP in Lime Rush for me. It will not be in immediately, so I have some time to prepare. I am looking for some advice on maximizing my trade in value. I am having some difficulty finding out what add on items actually increase my trade in value. I have numerous "upgrades" that can be easily removed such as the Pro skid plate, Pro MT shift knob, box lights, bed mat, TRD air filter, window deflectors and third bed rail. These I can sell on Marketplace and put a couple more bucks towards the 4Runner.

I am trying to determine if it is worth pulling the topper off and selling it privately as I know from experience the market it hot for these, or just leave it on. I have asked the dealership how much value is provided for something like this, but the salesman did not know. I was however advised the aftermarket lift (5100's set to 2 inch and 1.5" AAL) will detract from the value due to their liability BS etc. I am considering setting the 5100's to stock height and removing the AAL if this will give me better trade in value. I also have custom made seat covers that retail for about $800 CAD, those I assume will not garner much trade in value.

I would appreciate some advice from those with experience on this or are in the know!

    Cheers,

    MM

I pulled everything off my 2011 Tacoma I could when I sold it. It showed up with a lift, aftermarket tires and 33's. After we agreed on a trade in price for it, I asked if I could pull all the aftermarket stuff. They said sure whatever.

I made a decent amount of money back, even had a guy show up at my house and we swapped my Icon suspension with his stock stuff.

I'd recommend pulling whatever you can off the truck that the dealer will allow.

If you are willing to list and sell a bunch of stuff, pull as much of the aftermarket parts off as you can to get as close to stock as possible.

Only thing I'm not sure about is the tradeoff between negotiating an adder for the topper vs. trying to find some one with the same truck and paint color who is looking for one.

In my experience, most mods don't add anything to trade in value and some may actually lower it. To dealers, used cars (and new cars) are just commodities with wholesale values that don't really vary at all with mods.

    agreed
just ask the dealership about the topper, that is it

strip it and sell it in the marketplace yourself

And make sure to clean your ride and wash before appraisal. Shocking how many forget to do this.

Like the others are saying, I'd remove everything possible and trade it in as close to stock as possible.

Maybe ask about the topper. They might give you something for it, buy you might get more selling it privately. Of course, this all depends on how much you feel like selling all of these things.

I agree with Running Bear. Dealers don’t care about your extras and mods unless they are detrimental to the resale of the vehicle. I personally wouldn’t deal with selling the topper privately. That will likely sit in your yard for a year before finding someone with the same model and color as yours. The topper will add value to the trade in. It’s likely the difference between the trade in and the hassle of selling it privately would be negligible.

Never tell a dealership you are trading in a vehicle until final number is in writing for the new one. Make sure to take every mod off possible as you won't see a dime for any of this. Spend a little money and get a good detail on it as this will definitely help with value. Lastly, shop around with other dealerships other than Toyota to see what others are willing to pay. Do your research on the vehicle to see what it's worth and negotiate price!!

    Best of luck with everything

The dealer has you coming and going no matter what you tell them or when. It’s a game you will seldom win with a trade in the mix. It’s the bottom line numbers that matter and if it’s not the right number try the next dealer.

I would strip it as much as you can and sell everything yourself. None of that stuff is really going to add any value.

You like the topper, I like the topper, the next potential buyer may not. There are a lot of pickup truck guys that don't like those.

    in the recent past

    YES YES YES

    now, not so much

as I understand it the msrp is pretty much standard for a factory order so the trade in price is not hidden in a bunch of numbers like it sued to be

a lot of folks were confused as the dealers used to say we are giving you 5 grand more for your trade
(but the difference was 2 grand more than the last car lot)

then the payments per month were over 96 months instead of 72 so of course they are lower and you pay more interest. duh

the shell game is less now as the price in Canada is mostly or at least a lot at mere msrp

The fact that they are getting MSRP confirms my statement that they got you coming and going. You can’t win at a dealership even when they make you think you have. With the selling price at msrp it’s irrelevant when you introduce the trade into the deal as this is the only variable. I’ve had over 20 new vehicles in about 30 years and dread the car dealerships. I’ve come to realize when car shopping you know you are getting phukked but just stopped by to find out how bad.

Sell anything you can, the dealership is going to give you as little as possible. In fact they may even try to take money off for added stuff, it’s stupid but not unheard of. When I traded my Tacoma, I had to fight for every penny I got, and it was thousands less than I expected from their original quote.

Since you have some time. Test the market in selling it yourself as you take stuff off (update the listing as you do). But if you don't have the luxury of the chance of sells before you get the new ride that obviously won't be a route to take.

You may luck out and find someone that would mod it that way, like i did with my Titan.

Since you have some time, have you tried selling the vehicle private party? If you don't feel like taking the parts off, you may get the most that way.

Remove every aftermarket thing worth $$ and sell it separately. It will take a while, but worth more than giving it at trade.

As for the trade, you could bring it to the local used car places near your dealer to get an idea what the dealer will/could be offering so you know if they are low balling you.

UPDATE: Good news gents. I took the advice and posted it for sale on FaceBook Marketplace. Someone picked it up last night for $46,000 CAD cash and I kept the topper. I will be able to sell that myself and get some more money back. I was at the dealership over the weekend, and they said top dollar would be $38,000 for trade in. 4Runner should be in mid-april! :D
