Has anyone used a sacrificial anode for rust prevention of the frame?

Like they use with boats and hot water heaters.

It’s been discussed before. I know they use that technology for pipe lines. Had a friend that did pipe line inspections.

Sacrificial anodes on cars have been shown to provide some protection on cars but they don't have that large of a radius, The Throw of protection is better for items submerged in water and on a car the water and wetness is all local, so you do better with galvanizing than a zinc electrode and you can buy that in a spray can that actually does work if the surface is clean before painting it on.

Basically, they do work, but are usually only used for small areas that are either critical or very likely to corrode.

Hm... So I could put a half dozen or so all over the place for maximum protection?

oh yeah sure just think of all the holes you will have to drill to mount them and all the location you will have to sand down to bare metal or you could always use lead wire to connect them to the areas that might save a 12 inch area from rust yup!:D

Hey, I know a thing or two about using 12 inches to maximum effect

I bet I could find some prethreaded holes on the frame in the places I'd want them. There were plenty of them for attaching my rock sliders.

well here is the thing both areas that it is protecting and the anode need to have the same event at the same time for it to work that means the area you want to protect from rust and the anode will both need to be wet at the same time.
Little bit about the attempt to do this was done by British Leyland and because the Anode works by changing the electrical properties of what it is attached to in a localized area (the anode is Negative charge) they tried to isolate the frame and body to make it neutral with 2 wires for everything and it did not work so good so then they tried to make the cars positive ground without anodes and that worked worst however high corrosion hit the frame the electrical connections and wires were perfect.
So reality no you would just about have to put 1 good sized one every 24 inches and sand the contact surface to bare metal that would be insane plus really not sure if it would work that well, The best thing I have seen was when I was helping rebuild a old land rover 88 series II with a frame off restoration had the entire frame Galvanized and as long as there is no damage to the frame it will not rust.

Worked in corrosion control for 30 years with the local gas company and for an anode to work properly on pipelines, they had to be buried about 12” below and to the side of the pipeline. Don’t think this would be feasible on a 4Runner.

Do they use the galvanic system or the impressed current system? on the Gas lines?

Oh! noticed that you are in Fisher NY Use to drive thru Victor NY all the time to get to Powder Mills Park or head over to Mendon Ponds.

They used to use 17# mag anodes on the distribution system and impressed current on the transmission system. With all of their distribution system now being replaced with plastic piping,I am not how they are handling it.

Complete junk. I worked for a dealer and used to install them. Took about 20 mins. to install and customers were charged a ridiculous price. Saw these same vehicles come in years later and the units were literally rusted away from their mounts. Unless your truck is underwater they don't work. Spend your money on a good rustproofing like Fluid Film, Krown or Rust Check. I know old rehashed topic. But when I purchased my '22 ORP my dealer told me that these aftermarket rustproofings could void my warranty citing electrical issues and swelled rubber bushings. Well I called B.S. citing my mechanical experience and they backed off. Please don't fall for this when buying new.

Yeah pretty much the same they are doing here but they can't use plastic pipes here for the oil lines

Not really going to work well because both the Anode and what you are trying to protect from Rust have to be wet at the same time and dry out at the same time So if you have a spot on the frame that water pooled in with mud and stays wet but the Anode is dry the wet area will just rust anyways. Remember Rust Never Sleeps

A complete and total waste of money. They don't work - period. The only thing they do is make the seller tons of money and give the buyer a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Dirty little secret. The Acme product is actually just as effective as the "electronic rust evader" products.

Have not heard that saying since I retired from the RGE 20 years ago. I ride my bike to Powder Mills Park and stay away from Mendon Ponds as the geese have ruined the ponds for swimming.

Powder Mills Park small but nice way back I had a short private tour of the Mushroom House that was rather neat, Most of my bike riding was in Canandaigua Area and went around the entire lake a couple of times.

Most of our biking is on the Lehigh and Auburn trails. Wife and I did over 2000 miles last year. When they did an addition to the Mushroom house years ago I had the opportunity to inspect the house with the contractor. Beautiful but not my cup of tea.
