    I got a 2020 4-Runner Trd pro. Currently running 285/70/17 Nitto RIDGE GRAPPLER I'm thinking of possibly running 285/70/17 KM3 in BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain. Or maybe a KM3 in a 285/75/17
    Any recommendations?

    I do not know if it would be worth doing that. Do you have any thoughts on tires? Nitto RIDGE GRAPPLER are nice tires, but don't have a aggressive look to them

    So why? Why do you want to go bigger? Just because or is there a reason for it? 285/70 up to a 285/75 is over 1.5 inches larger in diameter. You will need to start cutting....

    Things to consider…
    • Watch out for the tire weight. The weights starts adding up quickly
    • BMC Chop, fender trimming, viper cut front
    • Rig better be lifted
    • Alignment to push the caster forward

    I run 285/70/17. Lift, extended travel coilovers, high clearance bumper, body mount relocate, pinch weld mod, Durobump bumpstops, no mud flaps. There's room for bigger tires, but that would lead to re-gearing, which would be done along with front lockers, and I'm not ready to go there yet. Maybe with the next set of tires, but new tires, wheels, gears...it all gets quite expensive with diminishing returns and tradeoffs.

    It isn't about how much room you have inside your fenders in a parking lot. It is about how much you have when the wheel is flexed to the bumpstop and you turn the wheel.

    Regearing is a matter of opinion and also depends on your uses.

    Get the 34s and try it out.
    Some tire shops let you swap out within 30 days if you hate the tires.

    A good alignment positioning the front wheels just right will limit cutting. You can also gain a lot of space just shifting plastic around up front.

    Bump stop spacers on rear will keep from rubbing fender liners if you stuff the back wheels.

    If you just want looks and never really articulate suspension to its limits, you'll have fewer problems fitting.

    A lot of the pics in this thread aren’t really conveying the size of the tire. Are folks taking close wide-angle shots?

    For example, in the OPs pic quoted, it almost look like stock sized tires on a 3 inch lift, not the 1inch lift the OP says he has. Maybe stepping back and setting the zoom to 1x or more would help show what it really looks like.

    Boy am I nit-picky!!!!


    And @SlvrSlug, did you post a thread with an excessive number (the perfect amount) of pics of your rig at different angles? :D

    It looks like it, but I dont think it’s actually that high because the UCA angle looks kind of flat…maybe more like a 2.5 in lift???

    But that pic surely makes the tires look small. Wide angle is a funny thing though, slight differences in the angle of the camera can really throw things off.

    Wow, looks great on the OR wheels!!! Did you do a body mount relocate instead of a chop because you had to? Or did you do that and the pinchwelds as general prep for bigger tires to be absolutely sure?

    It seems most can get away without even a chop with 285/70 on stock wheels, maybe just a nip at the front lower bumper cover and maybe heat up an reform the mudflaps. Or do people actually rub with a fully stuffed tire? I’m trying to reacquaint myself with all Ive read on 285s, since I may be going that route soonish. I’m not ready to chop stuff though, and I enjoy off-roading, and it’s a daily driver…I need to tread carefully lol

    The relocate was general prep for later, my welder recommended it, and I thought I may as well skip the intermediate step. While the pinch welds do help for 33s, most people don't fully stuff the tire and turn.

    For 285s, I think the minimum is a slight fender trim on the lower edge in front of the wheel, and removal of the mud flaps. For harder wheeling, a chop and a pinch weld fold. For the pinch welds, you can fold the lower weld without making any cuts in the weld itself. That would minimize any risk of creating a leak in the weld. Some undercoating spray over the folds and you're set.

However, I had to upgrade the front and rear springs. Because the front bumper and winch and the rear bumper and tire carrier. I'm running a 285/70/17 with no BMC my tires do not rub.
    Haven't done any fender trimming at all.
    I ordered the C4 Wings today. Also gonna do a viper cut and BMC. Wanted to go with an M/T tire any recommendations?

    ok, I guess it is lifted up pretty high, I misread your previous post and thought you had a wescott 1inch lift. But you are way way higher than that!

    Anyway, I love my BFG K02 in the stock size. Pretty sure I’d buy them again when/if I go to 285/70s.

    I am going with 275/70s on my 1.5" lift. To go to 285s and do it right, you have to do so much. I don't consider UCAs or the bmc optional with 285s. A lot of people miss the panhard bars too

    Well, you can clear. You can do anything once. Mute point. You won't under articulation most likely, which is important. Panhard bar is an example of something people don't do but should, when lifting to fit those tires. It takes more to do it right. Either build an off road rig or don't. It isn't about fitting tires. That's for the truck guys with 22" rims and skinny tires

    I get what you're saying. But, I think 285's can be cleared with a proper alignment and the right offset wheels. There's not a lot of room, but I believe you can make it work.

    I don't know what point an adjustable track bar becomes a necessity, but I understand the benefits. I just don't believe it's necessary for clearing tires, as the rear can clear without any work.

    As far as the point of this thread; I think 285/70/17's are the biggest one should go before they really need to do some work. Anything bigger almost certainly requires a BMC or relocation. I have 295/70/17 MT's and almost certainly should regear. I have 3.9° caster and mudflaps removed and can still graze the firewall if I hit a hump or dip just right, so I need to do some more work to truly clear.

    This is correct. The BMC is the only thing I consider mandatory with 285's, and thats only when doing serious off-roading.

    Ive had two opinions on the re-gearing and both shops felt it was only something to discuss once past 285's. One shop went as far as to say they would want to get the weight of my rig with full gear loaded on the roof rack and rear to make a true determination if a re-gear would be beneficial.

    I keep saying that I'm going to weigh mine, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's definitely a factor worth considering.

    I've also thought about regearing it just for the sake of improving the crawl gear. I can certainly see why people like those crawl boxes so much.

    With the 295's, it's still fine for regular driving. But, you really feel the weight and increased diameter under harder acceleration.

    I'm not sure if I'll go with this size again. It seems like I'd be better off sticking to 285's. Or, I could go all out and step up to 35's. But, at that point, I start to think I'd be better off switching to a platform that's really built for off-roading.

    I just ordered 285/70 Toyo AT3s. 6 ply. No changing my mind now. They arrive Friday. I did a ton of research tho. I’ll be fine. Like others have said. Watch how much they weigh because your gas mileage will go down
