I doubt it will happen as reality sets in. Rare earth metals required for batteries (currently mined in countries with child labour) to scale the volume of vehicles combined with energy infrastructure makes this very difficult. As we get closer to some of these dates we will know. Only thing I think that could help change it is if they finally make a commercial breakthrough in solid state batteries with more common minerals/metals. Solid state could be a game changer with fast charging and large range. I’ve heard theoretical charge of under 5min and 800miles of range. But they have yet to be proven in a vehicle on mass scale. I think EV will flounder until they are better in all scenarios. Not just warm weather and city driving with no towing. Once they actually perform better than ICE vehicles across the board, more people will switch, not because we are regulated into it. Just my two cents.

But if auto manufacturers are already devoting large resources and engineering to designing their all EV lineups, along with major factory and tooling changes, then it would seem the push is coming regardless of infrastructure and raw material demand. Going to be interesting to see how all this plays out on every front, from company profits, to new vehicle design, etc.

Really curious what an EVRunner would be like and how that would change offroading and accessories. No more gas/water cans needed. Now you would carry a spare charging unit? If battery is under the vehicle, how would that work for offroading if you're scraping things up going over rocks?

I think within the next 5 years we might hit a limit on how many vehicles every auto manufacturer can put out due to the materials available unless the tech changes. Yes unfortunately canada has adopted this. I will buy a 2034 MY ICE vehicle lol.

Curious to see how the Grid would sustain the surge.
When it can barely sustain summer household AC units
Using gas generators to charge/power EV :(

Whenever I’m feeling down, I just read up on what it takes to charge the Hummer EV. Then I laugh a little and feel much better.

Please Toyota gods, don’t make something that friggin dumb!!!

Why wouldn't water cans be needed?

It will certainly suck for the overland crowd. But, it will be excellent for day trips.

Not needing a transfer case, driveshafts, etc provides some crazy potential for capability.

It's going to take a pretty massive array of solar panels to get any decent amount of range out of them.

Well, here's something interesting. It's part of a recent article:

One such entrepreneur/scientist is Sam Weaver. Dr. Sam has an impressive list of inventions. From the process to make carbon brakes used on most Boeing aircraft to the ceramic press that turns out the world’s thinnest aluminum cans for a brewery in Golden Colorado, you see Sam’s handiwork all around.

What he and his Proton Power team have been working on for the last number of years may just be the energy game-changer we need. In a lab just west of Knoxville, Dr. Weaver and his team began figuring out how to efficiently separate hydrogen from plant-based (biomass) material. They accomplished that and Wampler’s Farm Sausage plant nearby has been running on clean-burning hydrogen rich syngas for several years. In effect, they remove the carbon before burning the hydrogen.

That’s good, but their story gets better. Almost by accident, they discovered that the black powder carbon byproduct is rich in what they now call PPI Graphene. It has many of the same chemical properties of pure graphene. Graphene represents the holy grail of material scientists. It sells for as much as $2500 per gram. The Weaver team can upgrade this renewable and sustainable version from the carbon the biomass plants removed from the air for just fifty cents per gram.

    Now it becomes truly disruptive!

Pure, layered graphene is both amazing and very expensive. Light as a feather while unbelievably strong. It has incredible electrical properties as well. The last few years the Weaver team has focused on producing batteries using their graphene. Imagine a battery that charges much faster, holds that charge longer, is impervious to cold and contains no lithium or rare earth materials. Oh, and it lasts longer; 800,000 cycles compared to 1,000 cycles in today’s batteries.

All of a sudden everything from electric cars to large scale storage of “green” power for the grid begin to actually make sense. This is being accomplished without mandates, the heavy hand or even much help from the government.

    Imagine that.

This sounds too good to be true. But, if it is, it sounds like it could lead to electric vehicle that would satisfy my needs. And, it would be much greener than the EV's we have now. Sounds like a big win all around!

Well, I turn 73 this coming May. So I likely won't see this technology officially introduced. But it sounds like my kids might over the next decade or two (?). And likely for the grand kids. If this technology does eventually come about, it's more evidence of man's ability to overcome technical problems.

Too many mods and too much money

If you can keep the gov from being involved it surely could benefit future generations. And now here's the but, keeping the gov and their greedy mismanaging hands away from this tech will be next to impossible.

The EVs were a big hit here in Southeast Michigan last week with an ice storm and power outages for days.

No power at home and limited public charging stations working as well.

There was a cardiologist they interviewed trying to get a little charge to drive to the hospital to see a patient and only had 20 miles left of charge on his Tesla.

It’s quite sad that things have come to this.

Would you like to hear well your doctor can’t get his car charged so hang in there while you’re having your heart attack or Afib.

No different then hearing they ran out of gas and due to power outages they are struggling to find a gas station with power to fill up.

This was sort of different because the power outages were sporadic in many pockets over South East MI. So you could still drive 5-10 miles in a direction and find a gas station with power and gas. We used our local energy app and could see where the power outages were and head a different direction for fuel.

In all fairness, running out of gas and running out of battery charge are similar failures on the part of the vehicle operator. Power outages have little impact on either situation. As for me, in over 45 years of driving I don’t recall ever running out of gas.
