delete if not allowed but I get better answers here than on certain other forums...
my wife drives a 2020 Honda Pilot ExL. about 46,000 miles on the vehicle. She had to go on a trip this past week ~1,800 miles total. so before she left, I checked maintenance...

I'm normally really good on maintenance but to my extreme embarrassment, I found that it had been almost 11k miles since I rotated tires. so I rotated back->front two days before she left. most of the trip went well but on the return leg, her father (who is a pretty experienced auto mechanic) said the front end felt really off like a belt was maybe getting weird. they got to their house and found the outboard side of the front drivers side tire worn down to the belt, the passenger side was almost as bad. Back tires look good. Didn't put it on a rack yet but pa in law felt like the alignment was ok just eyeballing it.

So, I obviously screwed up not rotating the tires better-not trying to gloss over that but it seems weird....the current front tires have only been up there for ~900 or so miles. If any thing was gonna be worn, I would think it would be the back tires, since they were up front for longer than they should have been. Any ideas? I still wonder if it's an alignment issue (?)

46K seems early to wear down to the belt. I'd definitely check alignment. Any pics?

I'm confused, the tires were good and 900 miles later they were down to the wires?

Sounds like somebody hit a curb nice and good and the alignment is wildly out of whack.

I doubt this is related to tire rotation.

Many with many more to go
Eye ball doesnt cut it any more with softer compound tires. Put it on a rack before you put many miles on new tires.

46k and are those the original tires? Don't know what they come with from the factory but I've never had tires last 46k.

No pics unfortunately. left the vehicle at the in-laws since she had to get home-it's another 400 miles from there to here.
gotten to be rare for me too. we had two siennas that ate tires about every 30-35k no matter how I manipulated pressures, did rotations and alignments. Interestingly, the stock Dunlops on my 4Runner are at 66k and though he cautioned me to watch them, my tire dude here estimates I'll beat another 6-8k out of them.

Jeez, what kind of tires are you buying?

My MT's are on pace to last 60-70K, and my AT's are doing even better.

Mine were gone with 2 miles on them...I never drove it with the factory tires. I'd get 45-50k out of tires on my F150, there was always some life left but not enough that I was willing to drive them through another winter.

As for OP, seems like if they were worn on the outside he would have noticed when rotating them yet for them to wear down to the belts in 900 miles seems unlikely unless the alignment was seriously off. I'd definitely have the alignment checked as a first step.
