OBD2 Scanner Users

Hi. About 18 months ago I bought a OBDLink MX+ OBD2 scanner so I could watch temperatures while towing, etc.

Worked, except for one small annoying thing - the OBDLink MX+ will just fail to connect to bluetooth periodically, and once that happens, your choice is to re-boot your phone (according to their support folks) or press the reset button on the scanner and re-set-up the bluetooth connection.

 

Will scanguage work for your needs? I have the older scanguage 2. Now there is scanguage 3.

 

I use the Carista app and reader and have no complaints. It's been reliable and - as far as I can tell - accurate.

 

I use the scanner that came with Carista and run the ODBFusion app and have never had the problems that you are having. I'd try a different ODB scanner. Also, I'm running the app on an Ipad mini but, I can't imagine that would make a difference.

I don't think that you would need to rebuild the dashboards.

 

Yeah, I was close to getting Carista, looked like a great option and well regarded. Carista can do so much stuff, well worth it.


But i ended up going with a new head unit that happened to give me some good data too.

 

What unit is that?

 

Kenwood DMX 1037s. I was blown away how much data this gives like tire temp and pressure for each tire. Plus you can reset codes. But yo do need iDatalink Maestro used in combo to get the data.

 

I dig it! How was install? I was getting ready to spend $150 alone just to get tire monitoring on my '18.

 

Not too bad with wiring kit. Though i did have a car audio shop do the majority of the head unit Maestro install (I did amps and speakers). Its definitely an investment, but our 4runners will last a while so its worth it.

I have been wanting to upgrade my stereo system sooo badly. I did put in new door speakers, but they need amps and install the sound deadening material I bought 2 years ago.

 

I tried for about a year with stock then decided it was time to upgrade the stereo like i did back in the day. I really love music so it needed to be done.

I went with Alpine R series component speakers up front, 6.5 Alpine R in back seats and 6.5 Alpine X in the rear. 6 channel Alpine 600 watt amp to power it all and the Kenwood DMX with Maestro for the best of sound quality. I didn't do a sub since i need the space and surprisingly the Alpine speakers produce some good low range.

 

Nice. Does it provide transmission temps? I got the scangauge for towing, but that Kenwood has such a nice interface…

 

Don't rely on the head units info to be accurate. I have the dash display, a head unit, and a SG3 in my Tundra and all 3 read differently.

 

Really? I'm surprised by that. What units do you have specifically?

 

My Tundra has the TPMS in the dash display. I also have a Pioneer head unit and a Scan Gauge 3. All 3 show different tire pressures. The battery is 1/2 volt lower in the radio compared to the SG.

 

It does not. Intake, EGT, load, breaking, voltage, 1/4mi, individual tire temp and tire pressure. You can customize some of them too.

The interface it great and provides some really good info but its pulled from the OBD so its only as accurate as Toyota made it. Really good info even if its .5v or a few degrees different.

 

Sweet, ill have to check my options for Trans temp.

 

something is fishy here: T4R has no temperature sensors neither for engine oil, nor inside tire pressure sensors.

 

My scanguage reads tpms temperature on my 4th gen, never looked at it on my 5th gen though

 

May be TPMS more sophisticated than I think. Good to know. Thanks. ("calculated oil temp")
