First Oil Change at 2,200 Miles - Did I Wait Too Long?

I've had a hard time finding a place to change my oil but finally I put in Mobil 1 and a new OEM filter. The oil looked fine and not very discolored and I did not see any metal bits in the filter but my eyes are not great. I wonder if I should have changed it at 1,000 miles as so many people recommend. I plan on keeping this truck until I croak which, for the average American, is 73.5 years old!

    Did I wait too long?

No. If anything you were conservatively proactive.

    It's not a 67 Volkswagen. You're fine.

Well you could have went to 5k, or even more like most people. Manufacturing is much cleaner than it has been in the passed, not a big deal.

I have heard that the factory puts a specific blend of oil in that facilitates a good break in. Does anyone have actual data that supports this? If so, by changing the oil too early are we meddling in this? Thx

Toyota does not use a "break in" oil. Thas was common in the past, but not now.

I went 5K miles. Most people go the full 10K miles. It’s fine.

In a new engine I always change oil at no more than 400 miles, but that's just me.

Yes, the Engine will implode now!

Just kidding, I change mine every 10k and would not bother with an early first oil change

Don’t worry about “break in” debris. That’s what oil filters are for.

Nuthin to worry about. If you want to err on the side of caution, do 5k intervals going forward. It’d be surprising if the motor died before 250k.

I was going to do a 1k oil/filter change but after reading everything on here and other sites I think I’ll be fine doing 5k oil/filter changes. Many do 10k

LOL! I bought a new '67 Bug back in the day. It was actually a damn reliable car.

Your good. I didn’t do my first oil change till almost a year and 7000 miles. In hindsight, I should have done it sooner, but I’ve been on a 5k mile or 6 month interval ever since.

I grew up and lived in a 67 Type III. Dad bought it in Fall of 66. I was born in July of 66.

Spent my entire early life in that car. Performed all maintenance you could think of. Bought it from Dad for $400 summer 0f 84 when I went to college. Put 365,000 miles on that car. As long as you kept up with oil changes, valve adjustments, carb balancing, installed a new master cylinder every 45k miles and kept rpms up, it was extremely reliable.

If I were to take delivery of a new one, I would certainly change the oil in the first 1,000 miles. Hell, that thing didn't have an oil filter. Dad and I added an aftermarket toilet roll oil filter that sat on the other side under the back seat from the battery.

That was known as the Frantz Oil Filter.
I still have a brand new one in the original box and despite the fact that toilet paper rolls are different sizes today, originals are still made for this filter assembly today.
FYI, very expensive engines such as large commercial and military use the same type of filter for added oil filtering.
If anyone is interested PM me.

If you plan to keep it for long time, you should use Toyota 0W20, that has 750 units of molybdenum, as Mobil 1 has only 80.

You will find it yourself. Toyota had difficult decision to make: comply with US gov regulations and same time not to waste millions of dollars on warranty replacement engines. There are three major points of metal to metal contact in engine: piston wall to compression rings, camshaft to roller, crankshaft to bearing. all of them depend on oil film in between. Exxon spend millions researching for solution with minimum cost oil, and they succeed with minimum additives package (very expensive), affordable for retail, good for warranty period. Moly not cheap. Amsoil has about 150 units in it, but nothing beats Toyota 00279 oil 0W20 with 750 units. Expensive, yes. about $12/qt. Let me ask you: If you have a date with beautiful girl (as our T4R), where would you take her: to cheapo McDonalds or high end Stackhouse (like Stoney River Steakhouse, for example)? Do not be cheap on your loved one, and it will love you back, dearly. Use Toyota 0W20 every 5K miles and see you in 500K, just rust proof frame. Now it's my time for another drink.

I plan on keeping it a long time. But I think the cost of Toyota oil is too high.

There are not “so many people” saying 1000 miles. And I guarantee none of the ones who do work at Toyota.

Also you will never actually see metal flakes in the filter with your naked eye. If you did that would mean something major was failing.

Did my first yesterday at 1677 miles. My 1st 4runner (coming from a 2017 Tacoma) - bought it 1/16/23 with 12 miles.
I think I'll go ahead and do the next one at 5k (so another 3323mi) then stick with every 5k after that.

This is the type of typical stuff you’ll see on the filter after about 1000miles. And yes, those are tiny flakes.
    upload_2023-2-6_13-25-58.jpg

The filter above is from our 2018 highlander, after the first 1000 miles. I also found a fair amount of sparklies in the bottom of the filter housing. I cleaned it all out before reinstalling. The second oil change on this highlander had about half the total sparklies as the first one. After that, I have seen very few sparklies, sometimes none.

I did my first oil change on the 4runner at about 1500miles. It was much cleaner than the highlangers first change. You could probably count the total number of flakes. Very little black sludge as well. The bottom of the filter housing was pretty clean. Subsequent oil changes on the runner have have almost no flakes or sludge at all.

I recently did the first oil change on my mom’s 2022 Highlander with 2000 miles (same engine as our 2018). It was much dirtier, both with sludge, 2 to 3 times the amount of flakes, and the bottom of the filter housing required a bit of cleaning as the sludge didnt really rinse out with oil.

This! I was so happy my dealer had some in stock, but my eyes watered when they told me the price. At first they told me 18 dollars a quart, but then he corrected himself and said…no actually, it’s 14 dollars. Gee thanks lol.

This same toyota 0w20 used to be 5 or 6 bucks a quart a couple of years ago!

edit: and yes, I’m ignoring the perfectly placed Amazon ad under this post lol. Don’t feel like getting scammed…counterfeiting has really reduced my confidence in amazon
