Cooper ST Maxx 285/70/17

Looking at the St Maxx for my stock 5th gen TE and seeing mixed comments and am trying to get an idea if there will be rubbing at full flex. I'm not planning to do any suspension modifications in the near future but do want a larger tire to improve clearance. From what I can see people fit these with minor modifications to the fender liner and mud flaps.

Other choice would be the AT3 but the heavier sidewall would be good for some of the driving I do.

 

I don't know about that tire specifically, but that tire size will most definitely rub on a stock application. You have the stock wheel dimensions working against you as well.

 

Thanks for the response. Your last sentence is where i keep finding different answers. I see a lot saying that the clearance issues come with different offests from after market wheels. Also that a lift is not going to help clearance under full compression.

I see a lot claiming no issies with 33 inch wheels that cannot be corrected with moving the fender liner and trimming the bumper slightly.

There is a thread on tire fitment and it seems to work on paper. Just looking for some real world applications from the first person.

 

Aftermarket wheels or spacers will get that wider 285 away from your upper control arm. You can fit the 33's by doing what you said with the fender liner. However, you have the possibility of rubbing on your cab mount (I do and I'm lifted). Rubbing on the cab mount will require either aftermarket upper control arms or by cutting and welding on the cab mount. I managed to get away with just aftermarket upper control arms on my Tacoma to solve that issue.

Ultimately the best you can do is install the tires and cut/bend/adjust from there. It seems like everyone's got a slightly different rub.
