Hello. My name is Kathy. I just bought a 2023 SR5 premium with 2000 miles on it that someone had traded in at the Chevy dealership I work at. He bought it for his wife and she didn't like it so I snapped it up. I love it but I was on my way to Madison Wisconsin this morning where they got a fresh dumping of snow last night. The right lane was pretty good but the left lane had some black ice and snow buildup on it. Course not knowing anything about this vehicle I was going 65 and tried to switch into four-wheel drive and just got beep beep beep beep beep. So I put it back in two-wheel drive quickly. I pulled over at a rest stop and googled it and found out that I wasn't supposed to be going over 50. Did I do damage to my vehicle? I want another 300 miles and it seems fine. Course the Chevy guys that sold it to me told me nothing about it I just thought ooh pretty and bought it.

    Welcome.

The nice thing about the electronic 4WD knobs is that the computer will keep you from shifting at the wrong speed. It won’t let you engage above 50mph. If it was a manual lever, like in the TRD models, you would’ve been accompanied by some nice grinding. Shouldn’t have done any harm to the 4Runner.

This is wrong. you can go at 100mph in 4H if you want. But there is a speed limit to change from 2wd to 4wd and back. In your case (in SR5) reduce speed to below 62mph to change.

Thank you for the clarification on the min speed differences for the 4WD knob vs lever. I’ve learned something new today.

Just also Keep in Mind a couple of things First you can go faster in 4Wheel Drive But you can Not stop any faster So mind your speed.

Second 4Wheel Drive is Not For Continuous driving on Dry Pave roads it is for when traction is poor and there is slippage like snow, Loose gravel, Dirt, sand and so forth.

Just as a side note, we need to exercise putting it in 4-H & 4-L monthly to keep it lubed and it will engage much better when you need it. Welcome to the forum Kathy.

    Welcome!

Best thing to do is find an empty dirt lot to play around with it to see how it works.

Kathy, you have a significant advantage. Men are prohibited by law from reading the manual. You, however, may indulge to your heart's desire. ;-)
