    Hello,
I have a 2016 limited with everything stock and still in the process of modifying the look of my car with just wheels. I’m still trying to decide whether I want to keep a “luxurious” look in my car or change it up to an “off road” look. If I stay with luxury I would like to get wider tires and maybe size up to a 22” rim, does anyone know which size tires would fit without major modifications.
In the other hand if I go with the off-road look which rims and tires do you guys recommend so that no major modifications are done.
Any pictures of either one would be great.
    Thanks!!!

Welcome to the group. We are happy to share our experience modifying 4runner Limited.

First I would like to say I prefer stock XREAS onroad comfort over anything I've experienced. With that I like what one of our members @4RP did having a front spacer on front and having bigger 17in tires.

I really dislike 20in /22in or bigger wheels. I like bigger tires.

I went a different route and here's what I did if that helps anyone. I have few clips of under the vehicle how they work on rough roads and also hard turn test. But I'm not an expert, just sharing what I do with nothing in return.

    Thanks for the reply @kmeeg
What would be the widest tire I can use with a 17in rim. I’d like to see a more rough look without major modifications.

Well, 275/70R17's fit with stock suspension and those are about 32.2", 285/45R22 *might* fit they're 32.1" diameter and about 0.4" wider than the 275's, probably would depend on the wheel width and offset.

Personally not a fan of big wheels with rubber band tires but it's your ride not mine.

As seen I have 285/70R17 tires on TRD Offroad wheels. For my Limited I just had to push the front fender liner forward (vs for my TRD I had to cut the lower part of my bumper, push the fender liner forward and use a heat gun to push the mud flap back / flatten them as much as possible.). So keep that in mind, clearing tires for SR5/TRD ORP/ TRD Pro are little different than Limited / TRD Sport models.

I used TRD Offroad wheels as they meet the minimum width stated by tire manufactures. Also TRD Offroad wheels have less trouble offset that have less rubbing.

I used 285/70R17 tire size as I can get more comfy standard load tires. (I had bad experience in ride comfort running Load E tires in the past). Also with 285/70R17 tire size I can get fraction less than 33in tire and also if I want I can get taller than 33in in this size or in other words huge selection of tire options available. I live in CO so I need tires that have 3 peak mountain snow flake severe winter weather rating, so I can't go for "more rough look" tires like Mud tires / Hybrid Tires as at the best they only have upto M+S rating.

On another note many like TRD Pro wheels though they don't meet the minimum width to run 285 wide tires. But many run them and haven't seen anyone having problems other than I've heard tire shops refuse to mount wider tires on them as they don't comply. But major tire shops like Discount Tire may not make a fuss mounting wider tires on TRD Pro wheels. TRD Pro wheels have a little more offset that will cause little more rubbing than TRD Offroad wheels but won't be a big deal. If you want to keep with in specs FN Wheels have TRD Pro like wheels yet meets width requirements to run wider tires. They also have a note older Toyota center cap fit on their wheels and not sure if newer TRD caps fit on them so it look identical to newer TRD Pro wheels. I don't have personal experience on them, so don't have whole lot info.

But definitely search around this forum using that search box and you will find fantastic ideas from awesome builds some of the members have.

It’s good that there’s plenty of people who like the LE wheels, but those and XREAS were not for me. Once XREAS took a dive I got rid of it.

In my experience, you can’t give those wheels away (YMMV).

I do appreciate the Torsen diff, and the creature comforts, I’m keeping the LE for sure!

If you can find them, get these for the best style and off road looksC20C1FCB-8811-48B2-B729-5D97993EF014.jpg

I opted for the pro wheels with stock size c-load BFG KO2s, couldn't be happier. Will be doing a 2/1 lift in the next few months now that my XREAS is leaking (both front shocks) after a little less than 4yrs and 28k miles.

8F103B2E-66CF-491B-9316-82072804498F.jpg I too was torn with keeping the limited look while also getting a wider more aggressive tire. I decided upon a set of off road premium wheels in 17”x7.5” wide to maintain the limited look as I think the black and chrome help do that. For tires I went with the Falken Wildpeak AT3 in 265/70/17 oem size. The driver side tire did barely rub in reverse fully cocked but a heat gun and 15 minutes of your time will rectify that. It appears the drivers side fender liner is slightly different.

Or you could split the (diameter) difference. I have 295/45 20's on mine with 20" x 9.5" wheels. Decent ride and no rub.

    Welcome to the forum!

If your goal is the luxurious look, I think you’re pretty much there. I’m personally not a fan of big rims and small tires, but as someone else said, appearance is a very personal thing, and if you like it, don’t let anyone talk you out of it. If you’re just wanting a slightly different look, I really like what “2018 Limited” (username) did with his above me, by going with ORP wheels…it’s a great look IMHO.

You could absolutely convert your truck to the off road look, but you’re definitely starting off behind the power curve, with all the chrome accents and just having the Limited trim in general. But it’s certainly possible if you’re motivated enough.
