Recently purchased a 2023 off road premium and have discovered a massive annoyance…

Every time I depress the break (doesn’t matter if the vehicle is on/off or in park, drive, or reverse) OR use the turn signal OR use the hazard lights there is a high pitched frequency that is emitted from what sounds like the behind the driver side dash.

If anyone has been near an old computer monitor that emits a sort of ringing noise, it sounds identical to that.

I took it to the dealer and they claimed not to be able to hear the noise and thus investigated no further.

Asking for anyone else whose experienced this or may have a solution?

For what it’s worth, the dealer had me sit in a different 4Runner and I couldn’t replicate the noise. But then again, they couldn’t hear it so they wouldn’t troubleshoot. I’ve since narrowed it down to the area in the immediate vicinity of the fuse box area behind the driver side panel.

The noise never tapers off, it stays on for as long as the tail lights are activated.

Take it back to the dealer and make them fix it. Just cuz "they" cant hear it, doesnt mean its not happening...

You need to find another dealer. If this noise is that bothersome to you, and they say they can't hear it, they're lying.

I assume the 4R didn't make this noise on the test drive...?

There is a relay in the taillight circuit under the dash. Those can sometimes emit a super high pitched noise. Most people can't hear it, but animals like young dogs definitely can. Young kids can too.

Suggestion, invest in a good audio spectrum analyzer/level meter app (like "Decibel: db sound level meter" which is available in the iOS App Store and probably also in the Android store), install it on your smartphone, and use it near the drivers side footwell area of your ORP. With the truck's gear shifter in Park and with app activated, tap your brake pedal and see if the sound registers. Assuming it does, take your truck to the dealership and show them what you did and prove to them the noise is there. Make them replace the relay or whatever is making the noise. Good luck!

Here is a link to a video I made of the noise - the phone is right next to the source in this video. You'll hear me depress the break (swish noise) and then the high pitched frequency will turn on until I release the pedal.

I took it to a different dealer today and this time the individual actually heard it - but, was told its normal.

I'm at a loss - crazy to me a $50K vehicle does this.

Because of the chip shortage, and overall shortage of most things...some factories had to get creative with sourcing.

So whatever is making that sound, I bet isn't Toyota's first choice as a supplier.

I also have the same issue with my '23 ORP. I just turn up Taylor Swift a few extra notches and it seems to have solve the problem.

Yes, I have to turn up music or AC or roll down the windows as well. But sometimes you just want to ride in silence, you know?

You'll need the numbers off of it to look up what it does.

When I shift it out of park it pops up with an alarm saying “shift to P position when parked.”

Interesting problem. If I were in your shoes I would take that photo to your local Toyota dealership parts counter and have the counter person identify the part. Find out how much to replace it, and if it’s not that much, then give it a try and roll the dice that your replacement doesn’t whine either.

I would assume it’s covered seeing as the vehicle was bought brand new and has less than 2,000 on it - but, yes…that’s what I’m in the process of doing now.

I mean...when you press the brakes and it makes a coil whine, it means it probably is working...

I wouldn't drive with it unplugged.

It’s ironic that the vast majority of dealerships are hard of hearing.

So for those interested I’ve identified the part as the trailer relay converter.

strange for it make a noise when there’s not even a trailer attached to the vehicle.

Perhaps it's grounding out due to moisture out back near the hitch........

Guess one of the perks of old age is that being able to hear high pitch whines just ain't an issue. I viewed the video several times - I could hear a very slight "pedal bump" but try as I did I could not hear the whine. Back in the day when my hearing was better my Mom had some kind of sonic pest control device on her back deck that would drive me nuts - I ended up unplugging it during my stays so I know how annoying such things can be. Take your new found info to the dealer Service Manager and see if he'll just take your word for it and change out the part. Good luck.
