For my wife and I (no kids), we already had 3 reliable vehicles and I was waiting for one of them to become too much of a headache to repair before pulling the trigger on a 5th gen, which I’d wanted for years. Well, turns out those three vehicles were just TOO reliable and it never happened. In 2021 there were rumors that it was going to be the last year for the 5th gen, and like most others on here I didn’t want be a beta tester for the next gen, so I pulled the trigger. We had 4 vehicles between the two of us for a while, but finally sold the one with the highest mileage (at almost 200k miles) 7 months later.

May be people are thinking like the Tacoma where the 2nd gen Tacoma is better than the 3rd gen Tacoma.

Yeah, I guess there's different scenarios.

In my case, I wanted to start off-roading more, and didn't want to dump money into a vehicle I didn't want to keep. So, keeping the Taco would have kept me from doing things that I wanted to do.

If you just want a 4runner, but already have something that you like, I guess I can see waiting.

Yes, but this wasn't the question. The question was why people are so set on buying the final year of the 5th gen. It's not about 5th VS 6th gen.

At one point it was thought the 23s would be the 1st year of the 6th gen 4Runner.

I remember when I started looking in late 2018, I thought they might change it for the 2020 model year.

    I was so naive then.

I had always wanted a T4R.... Test drove one in 2011. It was moving like a turtle.
    I prefer keeping cars for > 10years
T4R has good resale value. So pulled the trigger. Got tired of waiting for new 2023 design. Which never materialized except with a Stripe.

I think if and when I get back into a 4R it will be 2019 or older. TSS is very annoying to me. I also don't even care about the LED headlights as they were also not very good especially with the two dots.

It could be the last of it's kind, like what happened to the Tundra. If the new gen. proves itself in a few years, then people can still sell it without losing much, or, if the new gen sucks, they can keep the last gen and be happy, or they can sell it potentially making money.

At least TSS does not try to steer the vehicle on the 4Runner, unlike on my wife's Rav4, I nearly had an accident when it was new because the steering wheel locks momentarily when you make a sudden turn and not use the turn signals first. I had to pull the steerer 3 times to move it. I have disabled that feature since. You can also disable the beep on the lane departure on the 4Runner. What I like is the auto cruise control though as it slows the vehicle when the one in front of you slows down.

ACC is my least favorite. Regular CC is fine for me. Rear cross traffic alert was the only thing I liked.

The new hybrid Sienna sucks by comparison to the v6 and it only comes in hybrid now (as of 2021 forward).

The tech is old in the 4runner. As everyone on here what they hate: gas mileage. What do they love: everything else. It could be quieter, have more power, better handling, etc but it's the Glock of the automotive world. I bought it because the drive train is reliable and it suits my needs. The absence of tech is a selling point.

4Runner owners with TSS can thank old-school hydraulic steering for that. If it had an electronic steering box like new cars, they would have tied lane departure to computer steering control.

Losing battle, I fear. Somehow people are reading '5th gen vs. 6th gen' no matter what. :deadhorse:

For me the decision was because there will always be people looking to purchase a 5th generation used years from now when I decide to eventually sell/upgrade etc. This being the last 5th gen model means that resale will be at the top end because itll be the "newest" version that a buyer can find, and will most likely have less miles on it. I know if I wanted a 4th Gen, I'd naturally gravitate towards a 2009 over an older one. Personal preference but that was the thought for me.

Understood. Thanks for explaining your reasoning.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the 5th gen will probably extend into the 2024 model year.

Will you be content with your 2023 or will you trade for a 2024 (assuming that's the last year of the 5th gen)?

I'm planning to keep my 23' regardless. Less of "I have to have the last 5th gen" and more of "since I'm buying anyway and this may be the last 5th gen, I'll get this one".

Eventually, possibly. Could be 2023, but that's still still unknown.

I stand by my belief that Toyota should continue to offer a limited amount of "4Runner Legacy" models that you can always buy, based on the 5th Gen.

I don't think 23 will be the last year. Cuz if it was, (granted nobody at Toyota asks for my opinion) toyota would've already announced it since we're in 2023 and 24s will start selling later this year.

And i wish they also had a legacy line. I'd be all up on a brand new 1st Gen manual.

Legacy line is a really cool idea.

6th gen sounds like it will come out in Aug/Sept 2024 as a 2025 Model Year.

New Tacoma in 2023 as a 2024 MY and potentially a new Land Cruiser added to the Toyota lineup coming out around the same time.
