    This is whole reason I’m buying a 2023. nice old school feel inside, feels solid and heavy, basic chunky knobs, roomy but not too elongated like a 3 row (Chevy Tahoe was on my radar until it got the elongation), doesn’t t have some of the annoying safety features of newer cars and other glitchy tech that doesn’t work 1/2 the time like my previous Audi and Forester.

    (So annoying to have my car automatically slam on the breaks when I’m backing out of a spot and it sees a bush behind or other parked car behind me)

    figure I’ll keep the 2023 for 3 years and reassess the 6th Gen. If doesn’t look or feel cheap or overboard on tech crap and better mpg and 1 year reviews are sounding good I can trade in. If only 2-3 mpg better, feels/looks cheap, less than glowing reviews and costing close to $60k then I’ll keep what I have.

    If your thinking onstar is better your very mistaken. Onstar tracks, stores, and sells location data. Just the tip of the iceberg, they also sell data about seat belt usage and vehicle speed. They claim the data has been anonymized, but after seeing how data is mishandled like Cambridge Analytica, I'm not falling for that shit. Your identity could be reestablished by comparing it to other data sources like phone location, an insurance company could totally do this and act accordingly. There are companies like Otonomo that specialize the vehicle data management. If you carry your phone around, your already divulging this information anyway.

    The one thing everyone here can agree on is our hatred of subscriptions making it into new vehicles. I hate that crap. It doesn't matter in the end, I don't have the money to buy new vehicles, and the newer 4runners are too big imo.

    The price you pay to recover your $40,000+ investment when it gets stolen. Also, are you regularly driving around without your seatbelt on? Are you regularly doing 100 in a 25? Are you regularly pulling off bank heists?

    That's the defense everyone uses for things like this. "If you have nothing to hide then why hide?", apart from being obtrusive the data gives my routine location away. It's not just governments that can use this data for bad, individuals could buy it. And this data is still able to be mishandled or stolen. It's like your SSN, the more people that have it the more likely it is to be compromised or stolen. I already give google and apple plenty, I don't want yet another company having my location data when it's really none of their business.

    Back when trucks were trucks. My dad had a '78 civilian version when I was a little kid, and my first vehicle was the short bed pickup version of this. I low key want one of these, but prices are going up and up.

    This was exactly my plan when I bought the 2022 (and though that 6th gen was in 2024). I like being able to turn knobs, hit switches, etc with my gloves on without taking my hands off the wheel to see where things are, and feel when I hit the right spot. Touch-screen based controls are one of the biggest safety distractions you can find in a vehicle - not sure how Tesla managed to get their approved (you can't even see your speed without moving your hands on the wheel - and better hope you have good eyes, because it's sized for 18 year old eyes).

    And that's from a company with real UX engineers. If they let the Entune people design the 'modern' infotainment system, count me out. I'm still planning on ripping that head unit out and replacing it because the UX is so bad (and pulling the plugs on the connected service antenna when I do - sorry, my car doesn't need to be online, you don't need to track me, I have a cell phone for emergencies that's a hell of a lot more modern and reliable than TCS, and I can schedule my own service thank you very much).

    As for the fuel efficiency gimmicks, my wife's old highlander had the auto stop. Most annoying thing ever, and you can't tell me that it's not hard on the engine. At least with that one you could disable it mostly, and then control it by not putting the brake all the way down. If the new 4Runner won't let you disable that in particular, or is deep into nanny-territory on other features I'll drive the 2022 until the wheels fall off (then buy new ones, and keep going until my own wheels fall off). I don't mind safety features, but never, ever, take control of the vehicle away from me, unless I've turned that on myself. Beep at me for lane departure sure, but yank the wheel? hell no. My '01 did that - it'd cut power if it felt the wheels slide, which they did on the sand after snowstorms...damn near got rear-ended because it wouldn't let me power through it.

    And for the people who think AI is the answer, here's the issue. Sometimes the safest thing to do is break the law, or deliberately crash. I've run off the road intentionally to avoid hitting a car that spun out in front of me. I've also chosen to exceed the speed limit substantially to pass someone texting on their phone and weaving all over the road, or to get away from a semi that can't decide if they want to go 10 over or 30 under the limit. And what if you're faced with a choice of crashing into a tree, or crashing into a playground?

    Can't program an AI to make those decisions.

    How long did it take Nissan to redesign the Frontier and Titan? They kept getting pushed of cuz they were close to the top in sales. Toyota knows the 4runner sells still... Like hot cakes, so why fix something that ain't broke until perfect? I'm sure Toyota would like to avoid the Tundra turbo recall issue again.

    The same reason Apple gradually catches up to phone tech. Yeah Samsung may have new great features, but Apple waits to release things when they just work! Samsung releases stuff to get consumers to be beta testers and deny warranty repairs. Lol.

    So I'm not seeing the redesign as a death to the model. Just a different generation. Like when Ford put 4 cyl Mustakes out there.

    My 2017 would lug the engine all of the time. The engine had no low end torque. Simply keeping up with traffic on hilly or winding roads was frustrating with constant major throttle input to get the transmission to shift to the proper gear. Then after shifting, usually too many gears, the thing is racing away because of how much throttle necessary to get get a downshift. Let off the throttle a bit and now it shifts back to lugging and can’t keep up. The S mode was the only way it was remotely tolerable but I got tired of shifting my automatic. It was the worst engine and trans combo I’ve ever driven.

    I definitely don't want my vehicle deciding how fast I should drive, or attempt to correct my steering, as I can see these things backfiring.

    I also don't like the idea of having my driving monitored remotely. I use Credit Karma and it's always trying to get me to let it monitor my driving to "save money on insurance." I consider myself a safe driver, but there's no way an insurance company is going to give me a discount if they saw everything I ever did!

    I like my privacy, but I have also met people who take it to the extreme. I used to hang out in a fishing forum, and occasionally people would talk about how they would give wardens a hard time on purpose. My favorite were the idiots who thought the wardens had no right to check their catches because they were fishing in a shanty, citing the 4th amendment. :rofl:

    On our venza, all that crap can be turned off. I hate it.

    I hate the engine shut off at idle BS. It was on the Bronco we test drove. That was not able to be turned off permanently. Marked it off our list.

    Halfway? I'm totally honest. ;)

    I really have mixed thoughts about these services. There's some up-side, with being able to locate and disable a stolen vehicle, or the car calling for help if you crash. It's a compromise.

    I just prefer it to be optional, so people can decide if they want it.

    I agree. I don't buy into the insurance tracker in your car cuz the other people on the road factor into your insurance too. Those things collect a LOT MORE data than they let on. But the helping someone sooner in a crash I'm all for.
