My wife is 6'3" and a delightfully yummy 300+ pounds, mostly in her butt and thighs.

Not trying to make y'all envious, I swear! This is very relevant, as she doesn't fit comfortably in most vehicles. We used to have a 2004 4Runner, and frankly, I liked it a lot. We had to get rid of it in favor of a 2006 Sequoia, because when we bought the 4Runner, we had only one baby. Less than two years later, baby #2 arrived, and with our sizes (I'm 6'2" and relatively average) it was impossible to be comfortable with two rear-facing car seats.

Fast forward three years. We now have a 5yo and a 3yo, in front-facing car seats. Thus, we no longer have to worry about putting our front seats so far forward, or needing a third row.

The Sequoia has been great, but we have reason to consider parting with it. It averages 17.4 mpg in normal driving and even if I go lightly on the throttle, never topping 60 on the highway, I can't break 19.4 mpg average. At whatever the greedy oil companies want to charge for gas, it isn't necessarily smart to chance the Sequoia's gas mileage indefinitely. We were able to get around 21 average with our 4Runner (V6, 4-speed automatic transmission) and if I kept it to <=60, we got 23. That's at least somewhat better.

We've been talking about downsizing to a 4Runner again. My wife said she is much more comfortable in the Sequoia than she was in our 4Runner. (I never knew she wasn't that comfortable in the 4Runner. For comparison purposes, she is not particularly comfortable in our '08 Sienna, and only somewhat more comfortable in our '11 Enclave given that the Enclave has been the main family vehicle lately and our seats have to be up a bit to give the kids ingress and egress. The Sequoia is tops for her, by far, in our current stable. But it needs a lot of work, and we do save on gas by using the Enclave.) We have a few options, and this post is meant to trace one of them. Does the GX470 from this generation offer any more interior room than the 4Runner, up front? (Of course, I recognize that it has the V8, meaning its gas mileage won't be as good as our 4Runner's was, but it'll still beat the Sequoia handily.)

If it's essentially identical, I'll check it off the list of possibilities. But we still see our 4Runner around occasionally, even though we sold it with 229K miles. These things are obviously built to last.

Don't get the 4runner to try to beat Sequoia mileage (you may get worse). The GX470 is the same size as 4th gen 4runner.
