Ride smoothness on different 4Runner models

I'm looking to buy 4Runner. I'm getting mixed reviews on the the ride of the different models.

I found the trd off road model to have a harsh ride. The limited rode nice but not as nice as the sr5. The limited rides on 20 inch rims while the sr5 rides on 17 inch rims. I found the 17 inch tires to be a bit softer in the bumps. I didn't drive the pro.

 

I think my trd Off road drives very smooth. I'm coming from a trd sport Tacoma.

 

I only test drove the SR5's, one with stock lift and tires, and the one I bought with a 2.5 inch spacer lift and 285's, my SR5 is a plusher ride than the stock SR5, the salesman who has driven all trims said my SR5 was the best ride he's been in. Compared to my 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport I traded in my 4Runner is a marshmallow. I love the ride.

 

Our '16 4R Trail, fitted with Goodyear Duratrac tires, rides much better than the '15 Jeep 4dr Wrangler that we traded in on it. We were very pleasantly surprised as it is our only vehicle and it handles the twisty highways in the Coast Range mountains at all legal, and some illegal, speeds. And it handles the forest service trails every bit as well as the Jeep too. - Ted

 

I have not driven a Pro or Trail but spent 10 or so miles in a SR5 and a Limited. The SR5 is more plush and compliant over bumps with those thicker side walls. We went w the SR5 for other reasons (no chrome, looks, price, etc)

I will say that the plushness gives some unwanted body roll in turns and nose dive when braking but nothing terrible.

 

You have to remember that it's a very subjective topic. I think everyone has their likes and dislikes with ride comfort. For me, I like a tougher ride. Some like the soft ride.

But yes, you're dealing with different suspensions on all models. KDSS is slightly stiffer, limited has the XREAS, pro has the Bilsteins.

It will also depend on what your plans for the vehicle are too. Leaving it stock, lifting it..........

 

Our Canadian Trail is an SR5 but I have not noticed any nose dive on quick stops, or body roll on tight curves. It is my 10th 4x4 since 1960 and it is, far and away, the best of them all. - Cheers, Ted

 

Same here. The larger the sidewall, the better the ride. Rides better than my traded 17 Tacoma. Feels chunky though like a Hummer. A different experience.

 

I had a 2015 SR5 and now a 2017 TRD Off Road and I feel like the Off Road rides smoother.
