Here’s the latest Car Care Nut video on the 5th Gen 4Runner. No new info, but good overview. Certainly not without opinions, but we all have our own opinions, right? :)

I asked the dealer to give me $25k trade in for my 3rd Gen on one of these but I haven’t heard back?

I can appreciate his comments on how the 4R was almost canned years ago, and how the new Tundra launch has not been stellar.

I wish I could email him somehow and find out what specifically he recommends to preserve the frame. I am sure he had seen ones with fluid film versus other products. He could probably provide some solid advice on frame preservation

I totally agree. I was just in Dallas last week, and National gave me a brand new Tundra as a rental. The twin turbo is nice... The truck is heavy but quick, but I REALLY was not impressed. I opened the back seat to find that my having my driver's seat 3/4 of the way back left absoloutely NO leg room for whomever chooses to sit in the back of me! Not even a kid! I don't know, but in my opinion, Toyota missed the mark on the new Tundra. I hope that they don't make the same mistake on the new generation 4Runner.

    Cheers,

    Sean

You may want to see his video on his new GX 460. During the oil change he explains what was used for the frame and the process. Look here - begin at 19:30.

    Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed watching that video. He is fortunate to have a buddy take nice care to treat the frame.

I know guys on a Chevy forum who live on Rhode Island and in upstate NY and they won’t buy a 4Runner because the frames rot out so quickly from the road salt. Having been under my K2500 Suburban a lot, the frame is C-channel steel whereas the 4Runner is enclosed box beam steel. Having owned a number of saltwater trailer boats, I know from experience the box beam trailer frames always rot the quickest because water gets inside and sits.

Too bad we can’t get these frames galvanized like boat trailers. My 1990 galvanized Shorelander trailer still looks like new
