Good thought. I’ve had a couple of cars that had front and rear crossbars. But I think the 4Runner’s rails are parallel.

Except for the 2010-2013. I believe that OEM rack had a slight difference between front and back spacings.

    So @ElectroBoy,
Are the 2014 thru current, rails different lengths?

On the “other” forum crossbar measurements were made for a custom rack system utilizing the OEM side rails. From my notes
for the 2014+ the distance between the rails, which are the same front to back, is 40 7/16 inches.

For the 2010-13 model years the width from side to side in the front is 40 1/2" and tapers to 40 3/8" in the rear.

Man some of you guys are giving op a hard time, he's obviously upset with what happened but if you read his other issues he's frustrated with the rattles and such on his brand new vehicle which is very understandable. I think the 4runner is great owned a few 3rd gens and I'm on my 3rd 5th gen and my current one is a 2022 orp and I can vouch I've noticed issues already (some rattles and such) that I've never had with my earlier 5th gens. I know this vehicle well enough to know what sounds like a truck (rough ride noises if that makes sense) and what's not supposes to be there (squeaks and rattles especially those that come from odd places)

I'm curious why anyone would trade in a vehicle for the exact same vehicle. Twice!??

I guess I don't know what the 2022s are like, but my 2019 still has no rattles with 90,000 mi of abuse. Every time I think there's a rattle, It's loose change or something else rattling in one of the doors.

There are plenty of reasons someone would do that especially if the generation has been around going on 13 years now, if you must know my personal reasons, one is I got hit my a texting teen the other is I made money on it and lastly (not in that order) just wanted something newer since it had a lot of miles on it

Definitely not loose change, I'm a die hard toyota fan boy as loyal as they come and I'm usually the first to blindly defend them but it is what it is. Look at the Tundra thread, it's plagued with issues. Toyota themselves said during covid they were using parts they normally would reject because they weren't perfect but now they consider good enough acceptable. With that mindset you start on that slippery slope. Look at Honda and Nissan, once legendary reliable companies now they make cheap unreliable junk

This is a forum where we come to learn or give insight or advice from our knowledge and experience and perhaps some occasional ribbing but it shouldn't become condescending or judgmental, not pointing at anyone in specific but the op might never come back obviously no one will lose sleep over that him being a complete internet stranger but what does that achieve?

I mean put yourselves in his shoes he bought the most expensive model (correct me if I'm wrong) it rattles, the limited it supposed to be a luxury trim and he bought it based off the reputation of toyota and the 4runner apparently and yes he screwed up working on his rig, honestly we can all say we have, well I have for sure. Telling him he's an idiot and that all your cars are perfect does absolutely nothing to help him but cement the idea that most 4runner owners are jackasses

What a "lot of miles", in your opinion?

It sounds like you would have been better off sticking with one of your earlier 5th gen's, if the quality has dropped off so much.

Research.. again. It seems like it would be well documented if the quality has really dropped off.

Edit: also, keep in mind, this thread was started by somebody who dented the living shit out of their roof because the directions did not specify to not dent the shit out of your roof.

I'm not sure how many people have told the OP that he's an idiot. But, I did read a few comments letting him know that the dents are his own fault, which is true.

As far as the OP's other complaints, the power issue is well known, and the rattles seem to be something new altogether.

Edit: if the 2022s are having regular problems with rattling, then that is definitely a conversation worth having. Maybe something happened in the assembly process that is causing things not to be snapped in tight?

If I recall correctly, @Pavo actually found the center console on his wasnt even snapped down all the way. By itself, it’s an easy to fix problem that ends once you snap it down, but it does make me worry that Covid issues really have been affecting how these have been put together lately. I’ve entertained the idea of trading for a fresh new 5th gen once I know they are wrapping up production, but maybe it’s better to hold on to a known good vehicle.

The 4Runner has enough power. More than vehicles that preceded it which are arguably better offroad performers.

    1990 Mercedes 300GE……..168 hp…….140 lb-ft@4500 rpm

    1997 Defender Ninety……….182 hp…….233 lb-ft @3000 rpm

    1975 Toyota FJ40………………135 hp…….210 lb-ft@1800 rpm

    Toyota 4Runner 5th Gen…..270 hp…….279 lb-ft@4400 rpm

Hmmmmmm. I have a 23 ORP arriving soon. $500 non refundable deposit. Getting worried reading about the later 5th gen issues

I did have a 2017 Audi Q5. Nice to drive, solid doors and quiet inside.

    Lots of glitchy tech.

Was at dealer twice in first month because rear break and turn signal lights stopped working.

then one of my parents was getting out of back seat and one of exterior side panels near rear tire area snapped off.

    rain sensing wipers glitchy.

When driving downhill engine would always get into high rpm’s and almost redline. Almost like it was stuck in a low gear. After I sold it to someone they had it for few months and told me engine “exploded” and had to be replaced under warranty

then my first or 2nd year service and oil change was like $500
That was last straw and I sold it. ✌️

I concur. I've never felt it's weak. It's a giant brick on an anvil of a chassis and it still scoots right along. I think a lot of people must have some version of carpal tunnel to their right ankle or something and can't press the gas pedal hard enough because there's no other reason to think it's underpowered.

It could be faster but that don't mean it's not fast.

I’ve had a ‘22 ORP since February. Coming up on 5k miles. No issues at all.

My daughter has a Forester. While I am very impressed with the Subaru, you will be pleased to know that the 4Runner out-classes it on the trail. :)

I've never felt that it's underpowered, either. It's like a rocketship compared to my '94.

Like @MeefZah , I wonder if people are afraid to mash the gas, or have some kind of flimsy ankles that make it too hard to push it past 20% throttle. Even on 285's, mine moves just fine.

I think the differentials could be geared lower, but that decision is based on CAFE BS and not driver satisfaction.

Still, there are enough complaints that it should make anyone who is accustomed to racecars test drive one thoroughly before buying it. That was my point earlier.

My 2019 TRDOR makes no noises that it shouldn't make at 105k. No rattles, vibrations, etc. And it's extremely reliable - still has the original battery in the key fob, even. Exactly nothing has broken.

And yes, it's quite fast enough. Power is good.

its still a great vehicle just know what the 4Runner is and make sure it’s the correct tool that fits your needs. Despite the flaws i still believe it’s utterly reliable and you can trust it to get you to the middle of nowhere and back

I genuinely think it’s some of the parts vendors they use, where in materials molding or machining I’m sure they cut corners due to manpower and or raw materials issues

The internet is proof that you can find people trashing anything, regardless of quality. People who have a complaint will always be louder than people who are pleased with a product...it's human nature. Congrats on your new 5th Gen 4Runner, you're going to love it. It's the finest SUV made, in my opinion. I'm on my second 4Runner and I've had two Tacos. All have performed exceptionally well. My 4Runner doesn't rattle, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it if it did. I'll take a vehicle with a bomb-proof engine that has tinny sounding doors any day of the week.

Tinny doors, reminds me of the Toyota Tercel we drove back some 25 years ago.

Ha! And that reminds me of the one my brother bought in 1980, first year for the Tercel. Very light and tinny, but that car was flawless in fit and finish, and ran like a well-oiled sewing machine. It was red, like this one. $4000 when it was new.

Took a buddy shotgun on wheeling trip and had to stop to get out to on a fairly steep hill. He was used to always closing doors firmly on his car….Anway, the hill really meant you had to hold the door so it wouldnt fall down hard.

Well, he got out, and slammed the door like his usual way. I didnt see it happen, but from where I was 30yrds away, it sounded like a gunshot went off, including echos deep into the forest

Honestly, I expected to see my door in pieces and shattered glass everywhere. Nope, everything works fine, no rattles. Tinny doors yes. Fragile? Not so much.

@keepschanging - in spite of your disappointment with the new Limited, you've done 4Runners.com a great service by creating a thread allowing all the owners who disagree with your assessment of the 4R to chime in, and even reminisce about all the vehicles from the past that the 4R surpassed. :amen:

On my several test drives of some 4Runners over past few months my only issue will be the oomph needed to get up to speed. Essentially only notice it a few times when going up hill on on ramp to freeway.

with that said there was one time the salesperson didn’t ride with me and I floored it and it did OK. Key is to really push the pedal. Most of my other cars I usually have to push down 30-50% to get most of the power I need.

I definitely see a pedal commander or sprint booster being added. I’ll probably drive it for first 2-4 weeks without one first and see how I feel and how it drives then may add it if needed.

I foresee a set of wildpeaks being put on within an hour of driving off the lot.

my 2020 Subaru Forester is actually a hair slower in 0-60 times than the 4Runner for what it’s worth so should feel more sporty to me. If I was coming from my Audi then probably not.
