Hello. 4R stopped on an incline. You want to proceed, and as soon as you let go of the brake the vehicle rolls backwards and traction turns on stopping you from going. I no likey. Traction control off, still happens. Awesome. First car that does this. Are you all two footing it? Is there something else you're doing? Mock me, then help me. K? K! Thaaanks. Love you!

It's called HAC (Hill-Start Assist Control) and it's been around since 2009 in the Tacomas and idk when in the Runners. It's auto and cannot be turned off.

Thanks for the info. "Hill Start Assist", but... its not... assisting me... start... on a hill. How does one mitigate this not so lovely "feature"? Two foot driving?

Neutral or reverse will disable it.

Wait! So on hill stopped, shift to neutral, back to drive, then accelerate? That work around... works??

I guess I don’t understand what you’re trying to do. Are you trying to roll back or do you simply not like it and are trying to disable it?

When stopped its fine. But as soon as I want to accelerate, I release my foot off the brake and hit the accelerator and in that time the 4Runner has already rolled back and the movement backwards combined with me wanting to accelerate forward makes the vehicles program step in and cut power to the throttle. I want to basically accelerate up the hill.

Simply accelerate. It will disengage itself.

I thought you wanted to roll back.

My Nissan Murano Platinum AWD did that. I hated it. You would have to almost stop and restart to get that to turn off. It was dangerous if you spun the wheels making a turn to try to get through an intersection before getting killed. You floor it and if it engages you better hope you get off with just a middle finger from the guy you slowly cut off and can’t get out of his way. (NYC rush hour driving)

Try turning off the Traction Control or Stability Assist when you are stopped AND before you release the brakes.

    Gotcha.

It shouldn’t. Are you sure it’s not just the normal lack of power from the engine? :D

I did that! I turned off the traction, and did the 3 second hold method as well. It still kicks in. Its a steep grade but still, this seems odd. No other vehicle I have owned is like this, including Toyota SUV products. I soon as I release the brake, the pig starts a rollin'! So I hit the gas, and it just traction control city!

haha! I mean, if it had a big more response I think I could beat it. Right now, more gas just gets delivered as slowly and results in it being stopped by the nanny systems.

Wolfman, I think your right, your gonna need to two foot it.

Since the hill start assist utilizes the wheel speed sensors, the wheels have to rotate for a sec to give a input to the computer.

It’s the same situation as the ATRAC. It won’t start breaking wheel slip until it senses tire rotation.

If they just used a tilt sensor? Then it could output the brakes immediately, hence eliminating the roll back that you are experiencing.

You just discovered one of the drawbacks of only relying on the wheel speed sensors.

Agree, two-foot it. If the hill is that steep, I’d want to do that regardless.

That said, have you tried just gently pressing the gas? After a half-second, it should release the brakes. At least on mine Ive never noticed it kill the throttle on a hill. Unless I goosed it so hard it would wanna spin the tires…(which would activate traction control, and kill the throttle).

2 footing may trigger the brake safety Toyota installed after the driver error unintended acceleration mess.

This is my 19 at a local steep driveway:

Mine has done that a couple times.IN drive but rolling backwards on a steep incline it will start beeping.
Thought it was just a warning to let you know not to hit the gas, not good for the drivetrain.
Either use the brake and gas in combo or just give it enough gas to keep it from rolling back.

Just took mine out on some steep hills out in the field. Rolling backwards in drive it starts beeping and the brakes activate,
But I could always hit the gas and it would take off, nothing killing the throttle.

Under what situations does this happen? Are you on slippery surfaces, or off road?

I've owned mine going on 4 years and I've literally never experienced this.

When I was a kid, a high school buddy of mine's mom had an 80s real-wheel drive sedan. On rainy days, my buddy would drive up a hill, stop, let it roll back slightly then mash the gas in order to do a burnout. That was the good old days before traction control, so the car was just spin and rev to the moon until it eventually caught enough traction to stop spinning.

Reading your post reminded me of that.

I was the guy who would roll back from a stop with my Moms ‘61 Chevy bel air with a 289cu in v8 with auto transmission and stomp on it. Talk about shredding some bias ply tires.
    Thank god for memories.

Haha, it occurs to me that she had two that we would do these shenanigans in. Really nice pictures. This was in the mid-90s, his grandpa was one of those guys that had a fleet of old beaters, and as she wore them out he would just give her another one. The first was I think an 81 Ford Thunderbird, it had a little V8, 262 I think. I remember every time we were go out in that car, we'd have to stop somewhere to pick up oil to put in it. It went through oil just as quick as it did fuel. Second car was a 79 Chrysler Newport with a 360. That car actually had some grunt, it would lay a nice patch even on level ground if it was anything less than bone dry. And with bench seats front and rear, we would routinely squeeze six or seven people in that car. I actually liked that car, it had a clean look to it and had one of those "run over a person at 30 MPH and not feel anything" type suspensions. With all the modern cars going to hard seats and stiff suspensions, I really miss riding in those "like a cloud" cars.

I tried two footing it, and it seemed to work well.

Honestly, once I release the brake it rolls backwards and I panic and hit the gas. Not too hard. What i consider fast but smooth and it just flips out and dies right then and there. I guess I will try releasing the brake, and just try to throttle through it. Slower and see if it helps. Thanks.

Hmm, no issue two footing it so far. Wait. I just watched it. Are you saying despite all of that happening you can just... throttle through?

The thing is, as soon as you let go of the brake its already moving backwards. There is no time to give it gas before that. And giving it more gas trips the traction control.

I might be a moron then. I am going to just throttle through. Let go of brake, gaaasssss.

Just regular, dry pavement on a steep hill!

Weird. Like I said, I've never had that happen with mine. I know a really steep hill near me, there's not a stop sign but if I can time it so there's no traffic behind me, I'm going to stop and see if it'll do it.
