Installing Toyota Predator Steps for 2013 Limited

New here and looking for some guidance. Would like to switch from RSG Rock Sliders to the Toyota Predator steps to make stepping in easier for an elderly parent. To facilitate the initial slider installation, the Limited rocker trim has already been replaced with the Trail rocker trim, so that removes the initial incompatibility issue with sliders and steps. It would seem that it should be a simple bolt on, but I cannot find any sales descriptions that indicate compatibility. Anyone have any experience with installing the Predator steps on a 2013 4R? Any help is most appreciated.

 

If the limited rocker panels have been replaced, then I think you should have no issue bolting on the predator steps. While looking online you might see that the steps are not compatible with your year and model, but I believe that is because of the rocker panels and you should be good to go

 

I prefer the N-Fab steps. Similar to the Predator steps.

FWIW I took my elderly Dad to try different running boards before I ordered my 4R in 2021. I thought I wanted predator bars but he had a super hard time getting in and more so out of the truck. Finding the step while exiting was tough for him

I went with the aluminum acccent board which has worked out great for him.

Anyway just wanted to share that experience.

I know it’s a rough balance between aesthetics and functionality. Best wishes

 

I wonder if its worth to spend the money on aftermarket automatic running boards? May be trouble messing with wires and may be reliability might be an issue, not sure. But on the plus side automatic running boards come really low and been a full step makes it so much easy for my pregnant wife to get in and out from my lifted 4runner. Its much easier than the stock 4runner with sliders. Especially when getting down having that full step is a big deal as far as I see from my wife.

 

Kmeeg the only issue maybe with power boards is sometimes they get stuck with snow/ice and break. I am not sure how the 4R power boards are but Ford and GM not so great.

I know newer limited 4R models have them, not sure how great in winter conditions.

Years ago with my first Explorer I just carried an old school milk crate for my Grandma to use. Worked perfect and no boards to look at. Maybe I should have done for that for my Dad on the 4R

^^^ This. I am in my mid sixties with bad knees. My 4Runner came with Predator steps. They were miserable to use. I have proper sliders now, but if I felt I didn’t need the sliders I’d choose regular running boards over the Predator steps.

ETA: Alex, you are awesome to swap your cool sliders for ho-hum running boards for the benefit of a parent. King.

 

Just go for the OEM Black/Chrome fixed running board. Beside the looks, it does prevent sand and rocks damaging the paintworks

 

Putting the style thing aside, running boards are probably the most practical solution.

Im surprised the RSG sliders didn’t work out. I saw a SR5 with them locally and they stuck out pretty far.

 

You know the aluminum accent running board grew on me. I did not want it at first but want my Dad safe obviously.

It works great for him and I am sure another 20 years I’ll be glad I have it.

 

Thank you all for the feedback. You are awesome. I think the milk crate will be a good temporary solution while we physically try a couple of different options to see what actually works. Running boards may end up being the longer term solution. Thanks again for all the feedback

 

I had RSG flat before switching to angled. They sit a bit too high for a step IMO.

 

Which did you get?

 

I got this aluminum accent running board (they also make a very shiny chrome). Mine is more of a brushed aluminum color.

In fact now they make this exact same style but in all black as well. The running board is the same just the aluminum accent is all black instead. If I had a red 4R I would probably go with that.
