Heated Steering Wheel Upgrade

Can my 2016 Toyota 4Runner steering wheel be upgraded to a heated one? and if so around how much it will cost

I don't know if yours can be upgraded, but I will say that the wife's GMC products (2017 Tahoe and now 2021 Yukon) have much better steering wheel heat than the 4R. Mine just doesn't get THAT warm... My advice is try it out on a 2023 before shelling out for it.

 

There are a bunch of these threads on here now but I'll summarize. We don't really know how much or even if it can be done yet. I'm sure it'll just take some wiring smarts and $$$.

 

While I can't compare it to the heated wheels of other vehicles, I will say that the one in my 4Runner has been awesome for me. It takes the wheel from being icy cold to being warm and toasty, where it is very nice to put your hands on. Not sure if I'd actually want it to get hotter. I generally turn it off once it has warmed up the wheel and the vehicle is warmed up.

 

Same here. Mine is great and I don't think I would want it to get any hotter, I also turn mine off once it's warm otherwise it's too much.

 

My steering gets too cold to my liking in winter. So I have this cheap Amazon steering wheel cover. Ugly but gets the work done with out having to wear glows or hold the steering with 2 fingers..
I don't thing I would be comfortable messing with wires on a steering wheel.

 

It’s interesting how things that start out as a luxury will over time become a necessity. When I first heard of heated seats I smirked. Then one cold day after working outside for hours I had the opportunity to try them. Wow.

ive never tried a heated steering wheel but they must be great judging from the way you guys are clamoring for them.

 

we have a heated steering in our Rav4 Prime, and it's great. I miss it when I hop in the runner these recent cold mornings.

 

I thought the same thing about a heated steering wheel, but in the two cars I've had that featured them, it was awesome. The older and stiffer my fingers get, the nicer it feels! (I'm awfully damn tempted to get my fourth four runner for this reason alone.)

 

You'll at least need the wheel and the clock spring. There's no circuit for it so you'll have to figure out that side of it. No one has done it because it's new to the 2023 and it's still 2022.

 

Haha. You know, you can point the dash vents right at the steering wheel?

 

I did it in my F150 (that I sold) basically it consisted of new wheel, new clockspring, and a wiring harness, I then also had to program it into the truck using forscan tool for fords. But the ford didn’t have a switch which the 4runner does… Someone smarter than me will make a harness at some point is my guess. I bought everything on eBay used if I could and it ended up being close to a grand. It was nice having it on my truck as it’s cold up in Alberta. The forscan software also let me change the temp of the wheel. Wish Toyota had an equivalent as good as forscan. As it also let you program a myriad of other things like Bambi mode and seatbelt warnings, auto start stop removal etc.

 

Yeah it’s amazing I used to think the same thing about heated seats and now as I get older I like them with winter. I’d probably think the same thing of a heated wheel.

I used to be the guy taking five gallons soapy buckets to the quarter wash in winter and hand washing after work freezing. That crap got old also

 

I’ll have to contact my dealer and see what the cost is for swapping my ‘22 steering wheel for a ‘23. My wife’s car has one, both our daughters cars, my mom’s car … just not mine . Hate having to wear gloves.

With the inexpensive Bluetooth Carista obdii dongle from Amazon (and a free weeklong trial subscription) you can make all sorts of changes to the 4runner settings (seatbelts, lights, horn, windows, locks, etc, etc).

 

I have seen these devices. Doesn’t quite have all the functionality that I would want. Better than nothing i suppose. I wish we could adjust headlight high beam and fog light settings. If we could I would buy this just for that. Rather than the bright box mod. I want more lighting output. Also doesn’t look like this device could activate heated steering wheel? If that’s even needed. Maybe it will work with just new wheel clockspring and a switch?
