Bull Bars

Does anyone know of any Bull Bars that won't interfere with the front radar system?

 

just a warning...bull bars are a touchy subject around these parts...

 

Why is that?

 

They are generally considered a damage multiplier in a front end collision. As in, not really strong enough to protect anything except maybe from hitting a small bunny.

@21 4Runner - to your original question, I'd say check with the mfg if possible. If they're offering these for 2020+ models, they'd better know that.

 

My problem is people parking in front of me and bumping into me and scratching my paint job. Any suggestions what I could use to stop that, that won't interfere with the front sensors?

which to be honest is a complete joke imo. The reality is that vehicles are made to disintegrate on impacts for safety reasons. The amount of force that is applied to a front end collisions is going to destroy your front bumper and your hood regardless of a bull bar.

 

Here’s a better solution.

 

Don’t pay any attention to these guys. If you want a bull bar then by all means you should get one. I don’t have one myself but if you use the search function you’ll find something. And welcome to the forum.

 

SSO makes a version to not interfere with the front system.

 

Have a look at front mount receiver hitch options.

 

C4 Lo Pro and bull bar will not interfere with TSS. Like the SSO option its steel. Might cause extra damage in a front end collision hard to say.

I know that bull bars are a must have in Australia for off-road so there must be products out there that actually work.

To be honest, on my recent cross country trip, I would have liked to have had some front end protection. I was very nervous during parts of my drive that were at night. We saw a lot of animals, both alive and dead.

 

It”s more that they are designed to absorb the energy so the driver doesn’t, and thus more shit gets damaged as it is designed to.

 

Same concept as Indy/Formula One cars to dessipate the energy.

 

Touch subject, but get the bull bars if it works for you.

I know what you mean man. On a recent trip back from SoCal., on the I15 just a mile north of Spencer. Middle of the night with the high beams on, we saw something on the road about a quarter mile ahead of us but , had to dim the lights for oncoming traffic. I started to slow down from 65mph and when we rolled up to it at about 35mph, it was a bull Elk and two cows just standing there. The bull was in the #1 lane and the cows were in the #2 lane. I hit the brakes while keeping the steering wheel straight and drove in between the bull and cows. The bulls ass was windshield height. Glad we weren't doing 80, (the speed limit).

 

In the 60's and 70's they were called push bars made of schedule 80 or even thicker steel pipe and could be used to push start other offroad vehicles. Not sure what their purpose might be now, mainly decoration I guess.

 

I think that’s the problem. Many of the options don’t look like they are actually engineered to take any significant amount of forces. Usually, they are mounted in such a way that the part of the bar that would take any forces, will simply act on like a lever on the mounting point, which is much lower (since they usually wrap underneath the bumper and back up to the frame).

For anything marketed as a bull bar, it’s probably safer to assume they are a brush guard. At least until you can see how they actually mount and the type of material used.

 

Since auto manufacturers decided that it was more important for the passengers to survive than the car. So, 20-30 years ago.

Edit: maybe not the best wording, but, the idea is that the car absorbs the impact instead of the occupants.

Agreed. And even if the bar itself looks fairly substantial, one look at the mounting hardware on most of them will convince you that the bar will just fold in on the slightest impact.

 

a bumper cover falling off isn’t “disintegrating.” Cars absorb impact. Crunch zones. Plastic covers falling apart isn’t that.
